hi and good morning - things are running well, no problem anymore with calibre-web.

I now like to make the PI and its data (not just calibre) visible through the net/wlan from outside (ftp/sftp/vnc?) the home, have already tried some solutions described by user but do not come to a final result.

would you be so kind to give me a hand in terms of that - shall I open a new thread or do we communicate via PM?

best regards Peter

and a good morning/afternooon to you!

Let's continue in this thread. It already is an almost "private" thread with only two participants.

Questions:
1 - what on your Pi do you want to make available on the www?
2 - to whom do you want it to make available? Just you or also others?
3 - with what devices (PC, Laptop, smartphone, tablets) and with what OS (Windows, Linux, MacOS, android, etc)?

If possible I will try to help. I might even learn something in the process!

thanks for reply and let's continue...

1. Primarily 4 different folders:
containing photos
containing videos
containing documents
containing miscellaneous

2. For me and others

3. From Windows PC/Android tablets and smartphones

Generally I like to work on documents during holidays and share folders with pictures with friends. Additionally I like to allow downloads of eg music to friends

The background is the following: I just run a website with these infos, mainly photos from travelling etc and I want to cancel this website - private websites are not very common nowadays, I have to update them regulary and it costs in the meantime 12 €uro/Month. The storage at IONOS 1&1 is 500GB/260,000 files. As long as I used the website for the storage of the calibre library it was a very welcome webspace, but now with the Raspi4B it is not longer necessary.

I like to make use of the photo library (I use phototonic at the PI) and share pictures of our travellings as used before with the website eg
https://www.haselau.eu/xxx.html

and make folders with music (eg just an album with 12 tracks in mp3) available to friends for download

Hope this answer is sufficient - unfortunately, I own two Synology DS220j and DS120j, not the +version. When I bought them years ago I did not think that I sometimes like to run a webserver...

So your main objective is to save some €'s? (And I agree with you!)

Using your Pi to serve video's, music and photo's can be done with eg. Jellyfin.

However it will not look as nice as the (paid) site you use for your photo's. That might be a dealbreaker.

The best solution for working on documents while not at home is "The cloud".
If on Windows use Onedrive with (free 10Gbyte?) space.
If a fan of Google use Gmail.com with 15Gbyte space.
Also the free 2Gbyte of Dropbox is an option.
If privacy paranoid (and I more or less am sometimes) don't.

If you also want to upload photo's and documents etc. perhaps make the Pi work as a ftp server (it works, but I was never a real fan of it, maybe because I never could make I work the way I wanted it to).

And then you need to be able to remote login to move the uploaded files to a place where they can be used to serve them.

To make all of this work is a lot of work (specially if one has to wait for a reply on mobileread.com if running into a problem.

So what will you try first? What has priority? Or what will be the most fun to work on?

I retired from all clouds in the world I ever run: OneDrive, Google etc - as with my ebooks and calibre: I like to host things on my own computer/PI at home

It would be enough to run the PI as ftp/sftp server which already works within my home wifi, but not outside and exactly that ist the problem (ftp/sftp) I like to solve

All photos (14,000) are already on the PI, example:

/media/huber75/deltatronic-old/Camera - Lightroom/1997-05-25 - USA New England Massachussetts

Now I want to reach this (and other folder) via ftp/sftp from outside

OK! ftp/ftps/sftp it is. I will try to make it work on my Pi and the tell you what I did (tomorrow).

What ftp server do you use on your Pi? And what client on a PC?

And you have a backup of all the photo's? Better safe than sorry!

backup of my photos: If someone has more backups of all my files/folders/directories/even hard discs local at home and extern (friend) I appreciate to meet him/her

VNC viewer: should be clear: is installed on both my PIs and a local PC and 2 smartphone and 2 tablets (see pic attached)

I use ftp/sftp connection via Total Commander (plugins) from PC/tablet/smartphone) to access the PIs folders

I guess that's it

PS: proftpd is installed on one of the PIs

Finally, someone to take backup seriously. I wish I did take it as seriously as you!

VNC-viewer should, for security reasons, only be used inside your LAN.

If it's just you that wants to use sftp it is not difficult.

If you want to give others sftp access, now that they can see (almost) all files on you Pi.
It is possible to restrict access, but that takes some more work setting it up.

btw: I found freefilesync (opensource) which meets my requirements best. It is simple (open source) and I run it twice a day to synchronize files between PC, both PIs via sftp and different hard discs, internal and external

VNC ist just running on LAN here at home

I took a look at freefilesync, and I will test it for myself.

Am I correct in thinking that it does not run on the Raspberry Pi's?
But it does (s)ftp to the Pi's.

Inside the LAN just using ftp might be faster than sftp and just as secure (encryption not needed). Outside the LAN sftp is necessary for security.

correct: freefilesync runs on a pc and has - amongst other - entries via sftp to the PIs

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was curious and, on the PI3B, I installed jellyfine. There is a rather good description with all steps I followed (except the way how to make use of a static ip). Finally I have access via my ip address, created myself as user and gave info to the directory of my photos. So far, so good..

So far, so bad: On the PI 3B jellyfine is as slow as described in the net, 14,000 photos seem to be a hell of work to do a good job; but: just for trial purposes it is ok. I additionally created guest accounts, just to see, how to share files and/or folders with them.

Question: would jellyfine work much better on the PI 4B (it should as it is described in forums) and is that really the solution for my intention?!

Because: I'm able eg to share a specific folder with eg 12 photos with friend "A" or friend "B" (they have exclusively access to this folder), but cannot download the folder in total but only by viewing and downloading all 12 single files - that cannot be correct, or?...

And: Within the menu "library" it shows 1) the path to the directory of all 14,000 photos and 2) the folder, I like to share with friend "A" or "B", resp, too - is it really necessary to pick out each folder that's for share additionally to the menu "library" instead of picking it out of the library's directory

hope, the last question does not confuse too much, hence, a pic attached

14.000 pictures/photo's is probably too much for a raspberry pi 3B. I think jellyfin makes thumbnails of all the pictures/photo's to display. That takes a lot op CPU power that the 3B just does not have. The raspberry pi 4 (4GB) has more RAM and has significantly faster CPU. To optimise this use a SSD for the pictures/photo's.

I never used jellyfin for photo's, but I will try...
Maybe the www will offer a solution?

##############

I am almost ready with testing the sftp access from outside of the LAN.
It works, but I am not satisfied my solution is secure enough.

I probably give jellyfin a chance on the PI 4B, but at least, the sharing system is not the solution I'm looking for...

You are ready and it works - great: would you please share your result with me?

First let's try the "unsafe" method.

You remember your huber.freemyip.com url you setup for calibre-web?

Now let's use this for sftp as well.

In your router (fritz!box) make a portforward for port 22 (extern) to port 22 (intern) [I would use something like external port 22123 instead of port 22 but....it's your party] just like you did for calibre-web.

In FreeFileSync do not connect to 192.168.xxx.xxx but to huber.freemyip.com and use port 22 [or 22123 !!!].

User is the same as you use for internal sftp as is the password.

Does this work?
