The latest firmware has definitely and quite noticeably made page turns faster on my Kobo Aura HD.

Interesting. Two pulled releases in a month.

I think I may have to add a chart showing the history of affiliates accurate to the hour (only half joking), so I can make sure I don't miss a release, and also because it would be interesting to see if there is some pattern in the rollouts (I would use open proxys to check areas). <== This sounds fun. I might do it if I have some spare time.

I was thinking about maybe, if you can add newsletter, auto email sender when there is a new release.

I don't feel like resetting to factory on my son's Touch. Can I downgrade to the previous firmware by sideloading? (download the correct firmware, extract it into the .kobo/ folder, restart)

What you can do is copy the entire contents of the removable drive. Then you can factory reset, install the firmware you want, and put the contents back on the drive and you should be good to go.

While I usually recommend doing a factory reset when downgrading, it will usually work. And the less firmware versions involved, the more likely it is that there will be no problems.

When I do this sort of thing, I take a full copy of the book partition first. That way, if something goes wrong (i.e. me making a mistake), I can easily get back to the starting point.

Which is not really helpful. The only thing that really worries me about installing older firmware is that the database or something else in the book partition won't be compatible. That isn't much of a problem if you only go back a version or two, but there are a couple of changes in the database over the years that aren't backwardly compatible.

I have the H2O and I do not know if it would be the same for the Touch, but I have always side-loaded earlier firmwares after updates without any problems to my existing library.

When I have tried to do a factory reset before installing my favorite flavor firmware, I run into the problem of the H2O entering set up mode, during which my computer cannot see the Kobo, so I cannot side-load my preferred firmware. Also, during set up, the Kobo updates to the latest firmware, so even doing a factory reset I am still rolling back to an earlier firmware.

I'm a latecomer to the party. Just upgraded my Glo to FW 4.6.9995, patched it successfully, applied nightmode hack and everything seems fine so far! Thanks everyone for the patches and guidance.

PS: I am much happy with the large fonts in this FW.

I seem to recall doing this myself on my H2O. I think what I did is that after it downloaded the latest firmware, I was able to get it to connect via USB before it installed it, and I replaced the downloaded firmware with my preferred firmware and then let it proceed to installing.

I'll join the chorus who say they're happy with this update.

My favorite feature is the updated sort options for Books, Authors & Collections. Not sure if "Filter" is new in the Books tab, but these new options are very welcome!

This is where the Kobo desktop comes into play. If you do the setup via the PC, you can replace the firmware files before ejecting.

But, if you do the firmware downgrade immediately after a factory reset and before you put any books on the device, there probably won't be any problems.

Ah, so the Kobo desktop does have a practical use. I downloaded it when I first got my Kobo a couple of years ago it seemed mostly just a way to read Kobo books on the PC, which seemed kind of silly to me since I just spent a lot of money on a ereader. Thank you for the information.

Regarding my complaint to Kobo about the black border around the text on the Touch -

Customer Care sent a follow up email: "We will assume your issue has been resolved if we do not hear from you within 10 days."

So I replied to tell them that I wasn't happy that it took a week and 3 emails from me to even get a response and that the advice to force a reset was ultimately a waste of time as the update was withdrawn from Touch a couple of days later.

I have now had another response, regretting that I feel their customer service isn't good enough and giving me a 50% off code (I hope it works!) for my next purchase.

I suppose if the tech side are still trying to solve a glitch then CS can't offer much help. Responding within their own advertised 24 hours to say they are working on it and providing details of how to return to the previous version would have been better. Or maybe installing the previous version is what the reset would have done at that point?

Well, I'm happy for now and once again, a big thank you to all the people who offer help and advice on these boards.
