Speaking of Sony, I was walking thought Ste. Foy mall today, in Quebec, and I hit the Sony Store. They had a stack of Sony E readers for $99. Was very tempted to buy one. It has been awhile since I had my Sony, but the salesman told me that it had 2 gig and held a 64 gig micro card. They salesmen told me they had requested all the stock that Sony Canada had as they could move the things quickly .... And by the volume they had I am guessing they are right.

Hello everyone. I hope that the kindle keyboard I use lasts at least as long. I love my e-reader and the mobi format. I love reading. Where I live bookstores cruelly lack variety of choice, and being a book lover in those conditions was always a pain until I bought my kindle.

Now given the choice between e-reading and real books, I'd choose the digital experience...although I'm thinking of buying paperbacks of all the books that I've rated 5/5.

Question if I may, I am torn, now, between a Kindle and a Kobo. Kobo seems more open than the Kindle, but there is a conversion software, calibre I think that converts various formats to the Kindle. Since Sony is now under the Kobo store, does calibre convert other formats to Kindle? We currently have a sale on Kobo Aura HD in Ontario ($149) which seems a good price and I also have a $70 gift card that I can use at Kobo. However the world seems to be Kindle. The openness of the Kobo makes sense to me, but I have read that Amazon has pretty much sealed their books to their format. Just wondering if calibre would be the answer for me?

You can use Calibre to convert books both ways: ePub to Kindle and Kindle to ePub. Amazon books are no more "sealed" (whatever that means!) than ePub books are.

Calibre does convert epubs to formats (mobi, azw) that a Kindle can read. I use to own a Sony and currently own a Kindle. The reason why people say the Kindle is closed is because it uses a different format than epub. Epub is the format used by most other ereaders such as Kobo and Sony. So if you're using a Kindle but not using Calibre to convert, then yes, it is a more closed reader because you're pretty much restricted to Amazon and whatever vendors still sell books in the mobi format. However, with Calibre, this isn't an issue. I have converted Kindle books to epubs and now do the opposite. So it's not an issue. I shop wherever I like and buy books in both epub and Kindle formats.

My much preferred and favorite ereader is the Sony PRS-350, which is still going strong after over 4 years. Great build, sturdy, and firmware with PRS+ added is just rock solid, no issues ever.

But the reader I use most often now is the Kobo Glo only because of the front light. It's just slightly larger than the 5" Sony because of no buttons (buttons or no buttons, doesn't matter to me at all, although the extra functions you could assign to the Sony buttons with PRS+ was great) so the Glo 6" screen fits into the same pockets and small purses. And I really need the light around 50% of the time while reading, I use it out of the house as much as inside, so I gave in to the convenience of not having to carry around a light and extra battery. The hardware is about near perfect on it, but I find the firmware on it extremely lacking and annoying. But once you get into a book, it's not that bad if you stick to a firmware with the least amount of bugs and annoyances that bother you.

I think this is only true for books without DRM.

Do users here know how to remove DRM? Or is that kind of talk taboo?

Yes, users here know how to remove DRM. We can't give detailed instructions, but we can say "Google Apprentice Alf".

Mobileread will ban anyone who knowingly gives instructions or links for the removal of DRM.

Discussion about DRM is fine, as witness this thread. Anyone who goes beyond that (see the first paragraph) is history.

See post #192 for more information.

I do most of my reading on my Kindle Paperwhite 2. If I need to read something with lots of color, I use my Nexus 7 (1st gen). When I'm out and about, my Samsung S5 is always in my pocket. I de-DRM all my books and keep copies of my current reads on both my Kindle and my phone.

I'm toying with the idea of replacing my Nexus 7 with a Samsung Galaxy S 8.4 inch. It would be primarily for watching video and web surfing, but I would also use it for reading PDFs and graphic novels.
