Note: in order to force full screen refresh, long-press the top button (or [left]).
Question: with all that real estate, the file browser ('Storage'), using either six rows or nine cells, is impractical - too little info per page. Can anyone indicate a good file browser, which can display a good number of filenames (I would say there 3x8 = 24 would be a most reasonable amount) per page/screen? Of course, that would be to navigate your collection and choose a reader application. |

@Pierro78: I think I saw over 5GB free in the auto-mounted /sdcard ...
This promises plentiful space. Of course, you also have the SD card slot According to settings interface, -- in the (/data) Internal Storage I have a total space of 496MB, of which around 100MB already used - which include non out-of-the-box applications I also installed today - and around 400MB free. I suppose out-of-the-box it may have been 40MB used and 460MB free. -- in the (/sdcard) Internal Storage I have a total space of 5.94GB, almost completely available. The df returns: Code:
/dev 488M 32K 488M 4096 /vendor 7M 2M 5M 1024 /mnt/asec 488M 0K 488M 4096 /mnt/obb 488M 0K 488M 4096 /mnt/shm 1024K 4K 1020K 4096 /system 364M 273M 90M 4096 /data 495M 92M 403M 1024 /cache 247M 6M 241M 1024 /mnt/sdcard 5G 61M 5G 32768 Last edited by mdp; 06-23-2015 at 03:31 AM. |

All the other plans for the evening aside, time to focus on what's really important
![]() Here are some more pictures for you. ![]() Side by side with M96. i86 shows slightly less area of the website. Neither M96's pen (left) nor my fatter pen for capacitive screens from a pound shop (right) nor a toothbrush work with the infrared touch sensors of i86. I'm puzzled how easily my pinky gets detected and the fat stylus not at all... ![]() ![]() Detail reproduction. Just look at Taylor's hair, enough said, i86 rocks. It also has an option for adjusting contrast wherever you happen to be which sticks for the entire session from what I can tell but gets cleared after powering the device off. ![]() Not exactly Apple quality... No, this is not where the microSD socket is... The idea was to remove the rubbery buttons of M92/M96 and replace them with invisible ones. Unfortunately their covering bulges out and apart from not looking great at a closer inspection it also rubs against the edge when the button gets depressed making this delayed clicky sound. Fortunately you can swipe to turn pages. The round button below Boox label works flawlessly though and I wish the < and > buttons were like it. It works as 'back' or 'backlight on/off' on long press. The power button is quite swanky too but this obviously offers little comfort in this case. The UI looks and feels pretty much like in M96 with some extra options such as an icon for setting the brightness of the backlight, the aforementioned contrast slider or the volume/page turn toggle icon in the top bar. Here you are, with the backlight in action at 80% and with the hidden top system bar. Mangas look really cool on this reader and very sharp. The light is a bit brighter at the bottom of the screen and my camera intensified this effect a bit, in reality the difference in brightness is not as acute and the screen is very pleasant to look at.

I got mine, and I agree with all the positive comments above.
I've got two related issues: ORreader seriously sux re. font support - choice of four, all horrible. I'd like to use FBreader, as I did on my M96, but it is pre-installed, doesn't show under Applications, won't uninstall from Application Management, and won't update successfully from the Play store. Nor will FBReader Plus install. Very annoying. It also won't use Caecilia .ttf or .otf files, at least not in the fonts directory in the root, as worked on the M96. I can't put enough money for this together by my birthday, but I can probably manage it by my anniversary. My wife will enjoy manga on this as well, although she will likely stick with her Kobo H2O most of the time. |

And in case anyone was wondering, I checked but there is no update for my older i86 engineering sample.

I'm still testing them, but I can report that Nook, Kobo, Aldiko, Kindle, Play Books, Scribd, and Moon+ Reader all installed and opened. Chrome looks good but Opera would not install (neither mobile nor mini) and Firefox froze. |

Looking at the reader in a dimly lit room, it is apparent that there is a row of a dozen or so LEDs below the bottom edge of the screen, and the bottom half-inch or so is brighter than the rest of the display, but it's not annoying in normal light. The display is also bluer than incandescent lights - not as natural a hue as recent Kobos.
Anyone got thoughts on how to add fonts? |
