Amazon gives people (bloggers, organizations, etc) money back when they refer people to the site. So say I want the blog Dear Author to get a percentage back on everything I buy at Amazon, I shop through their affiliate link. They get a percentage of all the items I buy, not just books.

If you have followed an afilliate link to Amazon, all of the subsequent pages you look at Amazon will still be "tagged" with the affiliate link. Unless you know which parts to take out, the easiest way to ensure you have no affiliate tags in a link is to manually bring up the plain amazon address (amazon . com without the spaces) and search for the book in question. Just ensure there is nothing after the .com/ part when you first access their site.

personally if i find a person or a site is very helpful, i don't mind if they get a little referral money via an affiliate link.

The problem was MobileRead Mods felt people were coming here just to make money. So they made the new rules to where you could only use affiliate links in your own thread. I can't even imagine how much it costs to run this site. So letting people still post their links in their own thread is a very nice thing for them to do.

We also get more sleep now (there were two of us up at 3am every morning trying to beat the other's posts). arcadata does a good job on the daily deals, so I ceded that task here (it isn't a completely trivial task, as you know, as you post quite a few books, almost daily, and does take time).

OTOH, I suspect more deals were posted then (I know I don't post all the freebies I see, not even on my own site, since Amazon started punishing affiliates that refer too many free book sales).

I actually used a specific tag for posts here, for those concerned we were cleaning up. The earnings were in the pennies a month (most only grabbed freebies, just as I suspect has been happening for most on the Baen threads, which will most likely be much shorter in the future).

That is why I stopped using the affiliate link on my site. Not worth the extra time for 2 cents if that much.

I know you were barely making less than pennies. I don't think it was so much active members that made them change that rule. I think it was we use to get alot of people posting just to make money.

You have proven that you aren't here just to make money and are a active member of this site posting like any other member. The others I can't say as much as they either disappeared or never post outside their threads.

I have no problems with people using their blogs to make a little extra. I follow yours and a few others who I give pennies to every now and then when I see a good deal.

Oh, thank you for the information, library addict. That really helped clear up some of the confusion. Lots of helpful, interesting info, and it sounds fairly easy to avoid making a whoopsie in the future.
Also, I'll definitely be going back to reference your post in case I forget what link parts to delete!

And I do appreciate it (I do make a bit more than pennies on the blog, just for full disclosure).

I was a bit stunned at how many free books were bought with my links when Amazon revealed the numbers (only a few days before their punishment began). I did make drastic changes on the blog and stopped the links here (and took the link out of my signature, as the freebies continued from here for a few days after I stopped posting freebies with links). I know some sites went under or had big shakeups (and have noticed the many fewer people posting here, as well). I saw one site post that their readers (a rather large following) were buying 50K free books A DAY! I'm sure they were making quite a bit of actual cash, as well, before they had to change their site (just from the sheer volume, unless they had freebie hunters only as readers).

I had to stop even using affiliate links for B&N (and have gradually not posted their links, most of the time, as it's just work for no reward), as they charged me for people using them (they deducted any coupons used against earnings, but paid zero on ebooks, so effectively charged me for referrals).

Indies!

Black Wolf: Lakota Man by Magnolia Belle
(Rock Star Alert) Ohhh Blu!
Note: I bought this a few years ago at Smashwords full price!

Cliffhanger by Amy Saunders
(The Belinda & Bennett Mysteries, Book One)
Note: The title of this book made me laugh considering the new trend in books. It looks like a Cozy to me but it was listed under Romance. I love these type of books and I am sure some of you do too.

Tainted Morals by Janene Hudson
Note: This looks like a Thriller Romance to me.

Notice:
You may notice me doing less indies as of late. This isn't because I am trying to be more strict on what I share but because there is a huge trend in Indies to write these short stories or serials which are like under 90 pages. It becoming harder to find good quality full length indie books. I am not going to post Serials because it's a marketing ploy that I don't agree with unless it's like an official Kindle Serial which I do support.

Thanks for all your posts, Blossom. I tend to look at the page count even before I read the blurb lately.

It amazes what I see people charge sometimes for what Amazon says is 90 pages. No one-clicks on the majority of them from me (sometimes a novella from a favorite author will get a click).

I don't mind Novellas. I read them and will post them still but a novella is a complete story not a serial or episode which is a ploy to get you to buy other parts and some of these serials add up to over $20! Write a full book then maybe I will buy your work!
