"Downmarket" in publishing would refer to books produced with neither the resources nor the expectations of a mainstream release. They certainly are cheaper than a NYT bestselling hardcover (or initial ebook), and virtually all fiction books of this description are genre: primarily romance, crime and horror.
In the article, though, the word isn't used all that precisely--no words are, nor are any points really made. It probably wasn't worth 5+ pages of outrage. |

Hi razia-sans and welcome to MR!
You might want to use quote tags when quoting, as well as pointing to the source. I remembered reading the last two paragraphs in your post before, and that is because they have been quoted in posts #80 and #169. |

Nowadays the British media is, IMO, a sewer of banality, inaccuracy, pandering and corruption. The good old Grauniad might have some faults, and may have deteriorated since it's glory days, but it's still about 10x better than most British publications. And will quite possibly be bankrupt in a few more years, while CelebrityLookHeatChat Magazine, the Murdoch Empire and the Daily Heil rake in millions of profit. That's something which may be related to their views on 'literature' versus 'entertainments' as I believe James Patterson refers to his output. |
