The books off the main line are definitely better, IMO.

I just finished Daughters Who Walk This Path by Yejide Kilanko. Loved it!! Set in Nigeria, focuses on family dynamics, sexual violence, trauma and recovery, with Nigerian political history as a backdrop. Moved onto Robert Goddard's Set in Stone. One of my favourite authors - I think I have read everything he has every published, but over a period of 12 or more years, so going back and re-reading his earlier books. |

One of my favourites too, and he definitely stands up well to re-reading occasionally. I think I'm missing the last couple of his from my collection, I must rectify that. In Pale Battalions and Take No Farewell are probably my favourites of his, but they're all very good.

About half way through, and I think it was a wise decision, even though it means it will be a couple of days until I get to Peacemaker. I'm also really annoyed that Peacemaker is not WhisperSync for Voice enabled. Really, folks, this annoys me no end.

I finished and thoughroughly enjoyed The Machine Stops, by E.M. Forster. A novelette first published in 1909, it's the first modern dystopia AFAIK, prior to 1984, Brave New World or Anthem. The poetic prose captured my attention and there's something to be said about the prophetizing skills of Forster, depicting a dystopian society of antisocial iconoclasts living isolated in cubicles comunicating through audio-visual tubes with their "audience" resemble so much these fakebook days... some favorite quotes in a book where they figure aplenty: Quote:

Meanwhile I have just read North and South which was very good and Great Expectations which was also good. I'm two thirds of the way through The Book Thief.

Vol. 3 is A Second Chance Both volume number and titles are written on the cover (that is when the cover displayed at the store matches the one on the book but that seems limited to Kobo).

I reckon the issue at Kobo is because at first only vol.1 and vol.3 were available. When the author got in touch with someone to make vol.2 available too, that someone may have mixed up vol.2 and vol.3. By the way, I just started Divergent since for once I want to finish the book before the movie release (just in case I want to see it on a whim). Last edited by samhy; 04-02-2014 at 04:34 AM. |

The Steerswoman by Rosemary Kirstein! It is very good so far. I finished Fever. It was a good novel. I recommend it if you like realistic historical fiction. Anyway, it was a swift enough read for me. I'm glad to be onto something with elements of fantasy now, though. |
