@ElWorm, Koreader advantages:
  • better PDF handling (can't say much about that, I don't use PDF)
  • 2-page landscape mode
  • night mode
  • nearly no restrictions for any settings. If something is missing chances are good that someone will cover it if it is wanted
  • OPDS
  • create your own touch zones (my MAIN reason to use Koreader. I wanted "touch anywhere to flip forward, swipe to flip backwards)
  • minibar with some options not available for normal EPUBs in native Kobo, like pages until next chapter
  • folder structure for the library
  • searchable (Calibre) metadata
  • speed (e.g. for searching or for (not!) processing books after disabling USB)
  • runs not only on Kobo but also on Kindle and Android (maybe you want to use different hardware from time to time)

The question should be, why stay with the native Kobo software?
Only thing I can think of: To be able to read DRMed books...

Thank you Ken! It excited me.

But, from windows, I can't change the folder 'book' to '.book'. I can't create a new folder '.hiddenbook' either. Instruction please. Thanks a lot.

Rename it to .book.
This will result in .book
No joke!

Try renaming it to .book. entering a period at the end also. It should accept the name and just drop the ending period. It also works if you need a filename starting with a period, at least on Windows 7 and 8.

If you're using WinXP, you'll have to use the command prompt to create the directory:
mkdir .book

I had no big problem with the stock reading app (epub) after the patch, but I use highlight quite frequently, and it ruins the database. Instead of copying backup database weekly, I use koreader.

Dictionary lookup is also quicker in koreader and the heuristics to strip not needed parts of a word (in English) are also better.

(Though one thing for Nickel, its rendering seems still nicer for me.)

Forgive me, but I cannot find how to create the touch zones in koreader (can do so in coolreader easily). Would someone please be kind enough to explain.

If I remember correctly the zones could be defined in defaults.lua. More precisely after the line:
Code:
-- customizable tap zones(rectangles)
You would have to save those changed lines in persistent.defaults.lua to keep them between koreader upgrades.

I think I saw something about being able to edit them from within koreader. I also think I saw something about auto upgrading. So maybe the persistence is handled correctly now, too

@jlynton I see you have a H2O, too. How did you install koreader? I just got mine half an hour ago

Thanks for that, I have found the bit you mention. A bit disappointed however, to see that there is no way to toggle the front light as in coolreader. That is a must for the Aura H2O.

@jlynton Why don't you use the two-fingered pan gesture?
Or does our H2O not come with multitouch support?

We have a new thing here, Markismus, called "Set Defaults" (in File Manager menu).
You can do all edits from defaults.lua there.

Just tried that, but all it does is to scroll up/down. In coolreader I have set it up to long press = toggle frontlight and swipe up/down = increase/decrease frontlight. It would be lovely to have these options in koreader.

@jlynton Yes, you're right. We'll have to hack the H2O just like the Aura HD to get multitouch.
