I was looking for a cricket! The dog was going crazy. We have a new thing over here to change the batteries of the smoke alarm with daylight saving. I'm sure glad I did. No more cricket, nor crazy dog.

Edit... Every floor board in our house squeaks. So that was never an issue.

Luckily I knew for 99% certain it was a smoke alarm, the question was which one of the three. Of course it was the one least accessible. I managed to pry it off its base this morning. We had only one 9 volt battery left in stock (our store sells them) but had no customers for it today. I already put in the new battery and clicked it back on its base, luckily clicking it on is much easier than taking it off.

Our smoke alarm always gets its low battery in the middle of the night!
Squeeze eyes shut and hope it goes away! Or bloke makes a big fuss fixing it - turning lights on and getting something to stand on and finding a new bluddy battery.
Our concrete slab doesn't squeak at all.

This type of smoke detector is perfect for difficult to reach areas:

Self-charging smoke alarm

It charges itself every time the light is switched on. This is the only type of smoke detector I have in my house now. I only have to warn guests not to flip the light switch on/off quickly as that is how you test it is working!

ETA: bayonet fitting is also available.

Wow! It can detect smoke from a rifle to, huh! What'll they think of next!

We have a crew from the fire department that come around once a year and test all our smoke detectors with some strange looking device. Like an upside down large tin can on a stick, they push it up over the smoke detector, and if the little red light turns green, all is good. These things are wired into a separate circuit in the building with a main battery backup. Nothing for us to do but feel safe in our beds.

Yes, they are available in USA - I looked on amazon.com for 'self-charging smoke alarm'.

WTH is wrong with everyone??? A customer called me a liar tonight because I spoiled her scam to get a product cheaper. I went to another forum I hang out at tonight after I got home and this dude's doing a whole long rant because he didn't like the book chosen for book of the month. Would everyone get their danged underwear out of the knots and calm the heck down, please??
