So far, as far as I can recall, I have only seen classical and audiobooks but that has only been over the last 4 months or so. They don't seem to have a big catalogue of jazz; catalogue is at https://www.naxos.com/nwgenrelist.as...t=Ballet&p_id= under Contemporary Jazz.

Maybe something will come up sometime in the offers.

I wouldn't have remembered the name "Roger Miller," but I eventually may have remembered the name of the song, "King of the Road." Strange what parts you remember. Maybe Father (a smoker who basically smoked his entire life--only Alzheimer's stopped that) said that to Mom, when he ran out of them, and sent her out to get some cigarettes on several occasions when I was a little tyke, and that's why that part of the lyrics stuck with me. Who knows?

If you're interested in the song and/or Roger Miller, you might be able to get recordings of him through FreeGal, if your local library subscribes to it. I've got to check into all of his discography now.

I hope that it's of better quality than the old James Brown performances on Soul Train that are on YouTube. Sinatra was actually probably quite a few years before that program was on the air. It's hard to imagine the quality of Sinatra being as good or better than of Soul Train. I didn't appreciate S.T. when it was new, like I do now.

GA, I remember you expressing in jazz, several months ago. I have been looking only for bargains, given the titles of this forum and this thread. I have seen jazz offered by some companies, but just dismissed them. Most of them were associated with sales that are not all that great to me--20% off, 10 for $100, etc. I will try to go back and check my very recent emails and see what I can come up with.

Oh, I should have mentioned in my first response . . . . Naxos is "the largest producer of music in the world," or something to that effect. There are probably scores (no pun intended) of companies that are Naxos companies, but they go by scores of different names. They all specialize in some type of music. Try to find out what companies of Naxos' specialize in jazz--I don't think that it would be all that hard--they probably list their companies somewhere on their own, eponymous website. Then get on their mailing lists. Wish I could help you more. There are no doubt numerous Yahoo! Groups and such that all they do is talk about jazz, often sharing information about where to get it.

Yes and no. From the site info on regular Naxos subscriptions:

- Access to various genres recording including Classical, Historical*, Film Music, Jazz/Blues, Nostalgia*, Classical Archives*, Rock Legends* and World/New Age.

* Due to the uncertain legal situation regarding pre-1972 sound recordings, Historical, Nostalgia, Classical Archives, Rock Legends and Jazz Legends recordings are not available for audio streaming for any users situated within the United States of America.

So for those of us in the US, no on most of the Jazz catalog. There is a separate Jazz catalog, just referred to as "Jazz" which is different than the Jazz Legends catalog, but I don't know if those are available because I'm not a member.

HOWEVER... There is also this: Naxos Jazz Music Library, which is a separate subscription offering for $94/year. (There is also a free sample sign up available that lets you listen to 15-second samples.)

As far as I know all (or at least many :-)) of the recordings of the 50 or so labels Naxos owns are rolled into the Naxos Records catalogue that I linked to, so I assume that any jazz under their other labels appears in that catalogue too.

To do a bit of a check, at least, I went to several of the Naxos labels and selected a title then searched for it in the Naxos Records catalogue and they were there. For example BARTOK: String Quartets Nos. 3, 4, 6 (Amati Quartet) is under the Divox label but it will also be found in the Naxos Records catalogue. There may be exceptions though.

I don't know if any of the freebees will or have come from their other labels, I think all the ones that I have downloaded so far (only over the last 4 or so months) have been Naxos.

Regardless, their monthly freebees are a great gift to those interested in music.

Would you say that the jazz selection in the Naxos catalog is fairly limited?

I can't say that I've personally visited there to see what's available, but the Internet Archive is bound to have a lot of the old stuff. It may even have some stuff from newer artists who, for one reason or another, have made their stuff available to the general public (probably with the usual caveats--no reproduction, no modification, etc.

I encourage you, again, to find Groups involved in jazz music. Also, be sure to join the forums, too (whatever distinction is to be made between the two), because they, like our little MobileRead, are chock-full of great recommendations.

My final suggestion: learn to like classical music instead of jazz. ha

Here's a couple to try:

- Daedalus Books --they are closeout book specialists, but they have a good selection of music, too. Request their sale catalogs. To my knowledge, they will all be in physical (mostly CD) form. Check them out at daedalusbooks.com.

- https://arkivjazz.com, as the name suggests, is all about jazz music. They do have sales from time to time.

I'll keep checking my old emails and see what else that I can come up with.

Don't forget to check Daedalus Books. I know that it calls itself a bookstore, but it's got a lot of other stuff like CD's and DVD's. They are a closeout kind of business, I think. If you get on their mailing list, you can also get some coupons that are worth a few dollars.
