I've heard of greasing the wheels, but that's ridiculous.

That's dangerous even for pedestrians. That's one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard. There are other ways to prevent rust. Paint them with a rust treatment such as Ospho, for example, followed by a coat of paint for added protection of desired. But grease? Sheesh!

In all seriousness, some great posts here recently, especially about pets getting older and people having to make that tough decision. I have raised 3 dogs in my life so far and have sadly had to put 2 of them down, both before their 9th birthday. Cancer, in both cases. First time was when I was 12 and man, was it traumatic.

But the second time was for my purebred black Lab Scoobie and in some ways, far worse. Best, big dumb, all play no obey dog ever. Drove my grandmother and great-grandmother crazy - he always wanted to play and would do laps around the kitchen/living room/dining room. I was around 21 when we had to put Scoobie down - yeah, I was full of myself, brimming with piss and vinegar, charged with the invincibility [and stupidity] of youth and I thought it wouldn't hurt as much as it did when I was younger.

Man was I wrong.

I only wish we had helped out Scoobie a earlier - we tried a couple of surgeries, but they only prolonged the inevitable and actually reduced the quality of life for Scoobie in those last few months. I don't regret much in life, but I do regret not pushing my family harder right from the beginning when Scoobie started to decline noticeably. I can still remember what I perceive to be pain in his eyes near the end and that he was begging us to help release him.

I learned one lesson from that - as tough as it is for us to let go of our pets, sometimes its absolutely the best thing to do. They will never tell us how bad they hurt....That's only one reason why we love them so much I think...

EDIT: And @Stitchawl, indeed that is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard...

I'd certainly be writing to the local government authority that authorized it and reprimanding them and a comment to the editor of the papers.

But you don't do that in Japan do you. They'll probably just keep sending out ambulances to clean up the carnage.

No... One does NOT complain in Japan. There is no 'Complaint Desk' in department stores and there is no official 'Consumer Protection Group.' In a few months, someone will suggest to someone else in authority when they are both suitably drunk so they can be forgiven their indiscretion, that 'perhaps' they shouldn't grease the manhole covers again. Then several months later, someone will suggest, again while drunk so they can be forgiven their aggression, that it actually be written down in the manual not to ever grease manhole covers. A year or so after that, a committee will be formed to look into the matter. I shouldn't take them more than another year or two to listen to all sides of the issue, and decide that such a sentence will be added to the maintenance manual. Once that decision is made, it shouldn't be more than a few more years until it is actually written into the book. But no one will EVER suggest that a mistake was made to begin with.

EDIT: If the newspaper ever reported such a thing, and reprimanded the local government, that newspaper's reporters would never be allowed to attend official meetings. There is no 'censorship' in Japan. There is 'denial of entry into meetings' for newspapers who report the wrong things...

(see past rant!) our new Vet told us there was no reason to change her food back, that the 'Renal' version was just lighter in salt. There is a financial consideration though... The Purina kibble was costing about $6 for a 5 kilo bag and the "Royal Canine" costs about $5 for a 2 kilo bag. But a 2 kilo bag lasts a couple of months... no big deal, right? She loves it. It's healthier. I'll spend the extra few dollars for that.

Our 13 yr old weimaraner's kidneys are failing and she is on a "renal" diet. Due to some new Australian quarantine regulations we can only get the cans, not the biscuits. The only other "renal" diet available is Hills and their kibble is $61 for 3.8 kilos, that lasts about 5 mins with a big dog. You can't even get a bigger size even if you could afford it. Their cans are about $4 compared to the Royal Canin at about $2.50. As you can imagine we cook her a lot of rice, potatoes and other vegetables. And we aren't looking forward to the day when we have to say goodbye.

I am sooooo angry with our condo management guy! He plays these little power games by keeping us waiting and changing things at the last minute. I hope his job depends on owner satisfaction!

yes my Newfie , no, she has never had anything like this before. she was out with some friends last week and apparently stuck her nose in a Russian Thistle. I guess there was quite a yelp and she literally left dust she ran away so fast. she may have wrenched her neck when she did that. poor thing. she loves smelling flowers, she always sticks her nose in the flower buckets at the farmer's markets

she is on muscle relaxers right now so she is actually quite chill'axed. she climbed in my bed this morning whimpering, she NEVER gets in my bed (except when we are camping). I knew I had a problem at that point
