From the Ashes, a new National Geographic documentary, is free at both Amazon & Vudu (possibly other providers too, I didn't check.)
Quote:
From the Ashes explores the experiences of Americans in communities across the country as they wrestle with the legacy of the coal industry, and what its future should be. From Appalachia to the Powder River Basin, the film goes beyond the rhetoric of the "war on coal" to present compelling and often heartbreaking stories about what is at stake for our economy, health, and climate.

Runtime: 1 hour 22 minutes

If you have an invitation, you can get 5 free tracks from Edouard Lalo's composition Symphone espagnole, free.

The "invitation" is free, and you get it by being on Alexander Street's newsletter mailing list. Point your browser to https://alexanderstreet.com, and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the webpage, in order to sign up for their email mailing list. It may be too late for you to get this week's (it's actually biweekly) free classical music from Alexander Street, but you should then be all set to get your "invitation" next time.

Now concerning the music for this time . . . .
This week's download features Symphonie espagnole by French composer Édouard Lalo. Lalo wrote Symphonie espagnole, considered a concerto rather than a symphony, for violinist Pablo Sarasate in 1874.

This recording is performed by the Orchestre National Bordeaux-Aquitaine, featuring violinist Roland Daugareil, under the direction of Alain Lombard.

"O Canada" Canadian mixtape

Two indie music sites, NoiseTrade in the US and PledgeMusic in Canada, are teaming up. In exchange for giving both sites your email address (easy for me, I was already a member at both), they'll give you a 35-song sampler of some great Canadian rock.

Thanks. Great find, I think (I haven't listened to it yet).

There have been a lot of great rock musicians/groups to come out of Canada--maybe more than in proportion to its population.

There was a rock group that was popular in the very early 80's that I really enjoyed, called Loverboy. I don't know what ever happened to them . . . .

Naxos has a big gift for us for Independence Day (a pet peeve of mine: calling the holiday "The Fourth of July." Do we call a certain holiday "The 25th of December"? Do we call another holiday "The First Monday in September"? I could give many other examples, if you're hardheaded. But I think that I've made my point. I digress . . .).

Not unexpectedly, based upon Naxos' gift albums such as this in the past, the gift has something to do with Independence Day. It is the album, United States Air Force Band: Roman Triology. You can get it in either the MP3 or FLAC formats, but not both (I forgot that, and selected the MP3, thinking that I could get both of the formats. ).

Why do they give away whole albums, as they do? Does true magnanimity still exist in the world today? I don't know, but I'm truly thankful.

I can't give you the address of a webpage to go to to get the album, because you've got to receive that for yourself, if you're a member of Naxos (membership is free), in an email message from them to you.

So, if you're a member, and think that you would want this album, be sure to check your email in your inbox.

The free offer is active until July 31, which means all of the month (plus the remainder of this month, June, of course).

When I saw in the Naxos email that it was an "air force band" I just assumed that it would be a military brass band, and I don't have much time for brass bands. So I almost deleted it; but just now decided to download it to check and happy to find it was not brass at all :-).

I receive no remuneration from anyone to give the following information. No one has asked, suggested, etc. that I make this post.

"Our" own Karen Olander ( "Koland") has the best write-up of the album that I have seen. You can find it on the homepage, currently, of her blog, at blog.booksontheknob.org (note: not ".com").

Let's say that you who have decided against downloading this free album. Or--and this could conceivably happen--you are extremely, extremely low on hard disk space and your thumb drive has just decided to quit and etc., and you can't download anything, please get some reliable drive space or memory somewhere before Naxos offers the one-free-out-of-three choices-of-albums giveaway in a few days!

No, this wasn't an (U.S.) Air Force band.

But one of their albums was one of the very few albums that Mom and Dad have/had was one of the U.S. Air Force Band's. It was vinyl, of course. Since there weren't many other albums, Sister and I just about wore out each one of the albums. There wasn't much music in our house--none from father, and maybe just a smattering from Mom.

Oh, the other albums? Nancy Sinatra (I thought that she is great. and every bit as hot as catwoman on the "Batman" TV series--why didn't she keep singing?), one in which there's a song in which a guy kept singing "I ain't got no cigarettes," while simultaneously snapping his fingers (or someone else doing it for him), one that must have been really old, in which I only remember about the LP that the group sang a song that had a line that which said, "shee boom, shee boom, yada, da, da, da, da, dada"--something like that. There probably were other albums that I've forgotten about.

Since Sis lives next door to Mom (Father is deceased), I bet that she has stolen . . . er . . . borrowed indefinitely those albums. They might be very valuable now. One of these days, when she's not looking, I may borrow indefinitely those albums for myself.

Twenty years ago Naxos issued a number of jazz albums. Does this Naxos membership offer jazz as well as classical?

This is the third time this week I've heard or read something about this song.
