Hey, that was a good catch. I didn't notice that.

5: The Dark Country by Dennis Etchison. Kindle version appears to be OOP.
15: I Am Dracula by C. Dean Andersson

Amazon has a similar problem keeping track of the Paperbacks From Hell.

This one is tough. It is sold as a horror novel and not a horror novel, but a thriller with supernatural elements (which sounds like horror to me). Point it, this sounds like a non-traditional horror novel, but with accolades from all over.

I think the cover is terrific.

The book uses a character from North's previous novel The Whisper Man, but I don't believe it's a sequel. More like when Stephen King sets a novel in Castle Rock.

I just finished The Shadows. I loved it, but it's convoluted and involved. As you mention it's a hybrid mystery/horror novel.

Convoluted and involved: That's the ticket.

ADDED: Alex North also writes mystery novels under the name of Steve Mosby.

It looks like most of his books are no longer available on Kindle. Only The Late Shift is available on Kindle (plus an anthology that had one of his stories). There might be an issue with his literary estate. Or perhaps he didn't have one set up properly, or his heirs are arguing.

There is a new Ruby Jean Jensen reissue -- "Night Thunder," the last of her 20 books with Zebra. It comes out on October 18, but you can buy it now through SmashWords for 99 cents. But it looks as if it's only available in epub if you get it there (so far).
https://www.smashwords.com/books/presale/1109446

You can preorder it for $2.99 on Amazon, B&N, etc.

Original cover:

If you prefer evil dolls, you can buy an omnibus of three evil doll books by Ruby Jean Jensen for $8.99.

https://www.amazon.com/Spoooky-Dolls.../dp/B09HSQ6TXX

Edited to Add:
The newsletter says they have 13 more books from other publishers to release! I hope that includes her Gothics.

Ruby Jean Jensen:

I'm showing the Pre-order from Amazon [USA], as 99 cents. It looks as if the info from her email regarding Pre-order price from Amazon is incorrect.

The Living Dead by George A. Romero & Daniel Kraus is $3.49 at Amazon US.

George Romero was often hamstrung by budget and wanted to write a book where the only limit was his imagination. He died and author Daniel Kraus completed the book as Romero intended.

it's a big, sprawling 600 page novel. The reviews... are what they are. I would say the reviews complaining about the book's left-wing politics must not have watched any of Romero's movies.

Other complaints though do sound valid. I haven't yet read the book as I was waiting for this price drop.

Quote:
George A. Romero invented the modern zombie with Night of the Living Dead, creating a monster that has become a key part of pop culture. Romero often felt hemmed in by the constraints of film-making. To tell the story of the rise of the zombies and the fall of humanity the way it should be told, Romero turned to fiction. Unfortunately, when he died, the story was incomplete.

Enter Daniel Kraus, co-author, with Guillermo del Toro, of the New York Times bestseller The Shape of Water (based on the Academy Award-winning movie) and Trollhunters (which became an Emmy Award-winning series), and author of The Death and Life of Zebulon Finch (an Entertainment Weekly Top 10 Book of the Year). A lifelong Romero fan, Kraus was honored to be asked, by Romero's widow, to complete The Living Dead.

Set in the present day, The Living Dead is an entirely new tale, the story of the zombie plague as George A. Romero wanted to tell it.

It begins with one body.

A pair of medical examiners find themselves battling a dead man who won’t stay dead.

It spreads quickly.

In a Midwestern trailer park, a Black teenage girl and a Muslim immigrant battle newly-risen friends and family. On a US aircraft carrier, living sailors hide from dead ones while a fanatic makes a new religion out of death. At a cable news station, a surviving anchor keeps broadcasting while his undead colleagues try to devour him. In DC, an autistic federal employee charts the outbreak, preserving data for a future that may never come.

Everywhere, people are targeted by both the living and the dead.

We think we know how this story ends.

We. Are. Wrong.

Wetbones by John Shirley is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
A flesh-and-soul-devouring addiction runs rampant through the dark playground of the Hollywood elite in this tale of horror from a Bram Stoker Award winner.

Welcome to Los Angeles, where every addiction is encouraged. . . .

Struggling Hollywood screenwriter Tom Prentice can hardly believe that the emaciated and mutilated corpse lying on the morgue slab was once his ex-wife. Then his roommate’s missing brother turns up in a local hospital having sliced open his own chest and legs for some sick, inexplicable reason. In Oakland, the Reverend Garner, a recovering addict, leaves his ministry in search of his teenage daughter, who was last seen in the company of her ghoulish kidnapper. And the Los Angeles police are meanwhile baffled in their hunt for the elusive “Wetbones” serial killer who leaves nothing of his victims behind except a damp, grisly pile of bones.

Though Tom, the reverend, and the LAPD are on separate quests for answers, they are all being led into the darkest shadows of Hollywood, where the debauchery never ceases and pleasure is a drug that devours human flesh, blood, and sanity. But the true source of the all-consuming addiction is the most horrifying revelation of all, for it is not of this rational Earth.

From International Horror Guild Award–winning author John Shirley, the acclaimed “splatterpunk” classic Wetbones combines the monstrous inventiveness of H. P. Lovecraft with the exquisite excess of Clive Barker. A true masterwork of modern terror, it’s decidedly not for the faint of heart.

I’m glad you noticed the price drop, too. I’ve been wanting to get that one ever since I heard an interview with Daniel Kraus on a podcast (maybe the Horror Show with Brian Keene).

The complainants about politics on the book are bonkers. Romero fans who have never seen his movies. Maybe they just put on Romero T-shirts or something? Or maybe as they watch his movies, that little “point” arrow flies over their heads.

If I'd been watching closer, it was $2.99. I think that price was a mistake though, because it was only $2.99 for a few hours...

Yeah, I heard complaints about the new Star Trek series being too woke. Same reaction: was your only exposure to Star Trek those awful J.J. Abrams movies?

The way I see it, I have a choice:

Read a novel by Abdulrazak Gurnah, the 2021 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature...or a novel about shambling bodies bumping into each other like bowling pins in search of brainzzzzzz.

Hmmmm......Decisions, decisions...Oh, hell: Give me some zombies doing the Watusi!

Exactly! Yes, I do want to read more Haruki Murikami. But hey, there's haunted houses to explore and demons to fight.
