In my opinion, the first two books are not as good as the rest of the series. It's in books 3 & 4 that Butcher seems to have hit his stride.

True, but if you don't like the first one you probably won't like the rest.

Try it, Jon. If you want, check out the TV show first. They're on hulu.com.

Say Jon! Are you reading all of those books at the same time? If you do, doesn't it take a certain time to get back to the spot in the story that you recall?

Okay, I thought you had a really special talent there.

I have to keep to a story or I get lost for a while in my train of thought and I hate going back to read something again. There's so much to read in this short life to go back again.

Thumbs down

After reading the excellent Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, I started on Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb.

It is a nice book if you want to fall asleep right away. Totally uninteresting world (cliches all over), a whiny protagonist, dull writing and NO action at all. I gave up at 1/3.

0/5

Avoid.

So it seems you stopped before the action !
As the book starts when Fitz is a small boy, you have to let him grow a little before he's capable of becoming the Assassin's Apprentice !
One of my favorite series, this one, but to each his own !

I highly disagree. The writing is quite well done. The characters are interesting to watch as they get older and how their lives change. And you did stop before the action gets going.

Well, I have checked the plot summary before I gave up, just to look if I am giving up something too early. Totally predictable cliche story. Not much action either - but lack of action is not a problem if the characters or the world are interesting. There is nothing unique about either in this book.

I like authors who can get my attention right away. It is very rare that a book starts out dull but later becomes good.

But of course tastes are different.

i am reading (for the umpteenth time) Lord of the rings.(the whole 1500+pages se

when im done with that i intend to track the newest addition to the Sookie stackhouse series by charlaine harris.

And just a bit off topic, has anyone heard of a newer book called 'Pride and prejudice with zombies?' it looks like a steaming pile of feeces but at least worth a good chuckle.
let me know what y'all think

if you have to get more than a third into a book for something interesting to happen, then its just not worth it. a good book is characterized by its almost supernatural ability to drag you kicking and screaming into its plot.

Just a different point of view, another time ! I was trapped from the beginning (and as English is not my mother tongue, and as I read it in English, I think it's quite not so easy for a book to do to me...)
But I think like JSWolf that evolutions of characters had much to do with it.
To make a parallel, I didn't finish "A Game of Thrones", that I bought just after the Farseer Trilogy. Haven't been taken in... Maybe I'll try again, some day...

PS : I saw the Assassin's Apprentice first time in French, and the plot summary didn't appeal to me then. Some years later, I saw it at Amazon, in English, and I decided to give it a try (didn't remember the french version then). I was so hooked I purchased the other 2 when I was always reading it. It was my first experience with Robin Hobb's books, and not the last !

I either imagined it in my pain med haze, or I saw that Harris has something out there free or nearly. I imagine it was at Sony, since that is where I was looking for unbricking details in my panic last evening.

Right now, I'm reading Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb. I'm rapidly becoming a big fan of her short stories, and this is the first full novel I've read. It has the dreaded adorable kid but I'm hoping that he will grow up quickly and the story can get hopping along. Meanwhile, he is one of the less objectionable precocious kids I've read in a while. I'm on page 92 of 1295.
