The kindle now even tells you how long in minutes until you finish reading the book. Which is pretty cool.

Yes, I can see what the percentage is on my Kindle (where I do 95+% of my reading.) BUT, it just isn't the same somehow. Don't get me wrong, I love reading on an eInk device (Original Paperwhite, in this case.) But I often don't have an intuitive feel for where I am in the book. I'm not saying I can't tell -- just turn on the percentage at the bottom. But if you read what I said, there's no _tactile_ feel for size or where I am. In many cases, I don't know how many "pages" there are in a book if I downloaded it directly to the Kindle. If it passed through Calibre, I undoubtedly used the count pages plugin, so I might have noticed that what I somehow expected to be a 200-250 page book was, in fact, a 411 page book. But if it went directly to the Kindle (as this book did), I likely won't notice until I realize that when it _feels_ like I should be at 85% of the book, based on how the plot is going and how long I've been reading, I'm only at 50%, which means we have at least one (and in this case two or three) major plot twists that reset the action.

In any case, I definitely liked this first Jo Nesbo book, and will be getting more. But I can tell that I'm going to want to read them in order, so something is going to have to give with the price of the second one, cause I am NOT going to spend $15 on it. (Current Canadian price - it's not available in the US yet.)

The problem with the Harry Hole books is that the translations originally started at number 3. The first two have now finally been added, but number 2 is essentially the newest one.

I'm the same. I always like to start at the beginning. I bought The Redbreast years ago - I think it was one of my earliest kindle books - but I was never quite happy that it wasn't the real first book, so I didn't read it. I have now managed to pick up The Bat, which I will be able to read when I get round to it, and maybe the next one will be cheaper by then.

Yes, it will have to come down a bit in price. Or maybe they'll add a couple more copies at the Library. Right now they have only a single copy, which isn't enough from the looks of things. Or once Amazon in the US has it, that may tend to force pricing down a bit.

Some series I don't care about order. But in this one, I can see that there will be things related to Harry himself that encourage one to read in order.

It's a really good thing to do, though I'm not sure I'm up for it. I did it two years ago, and it went well, but last year I just couldn't keep it up to date. OTOH, I may try again. We'll see.

I agree with pdurrant that it is well worth doing - in my case largely so that I can check if I have read the book before. Even fairly recent ones get forgotten, especially if part of a series, so it's great to be able to search my book list to double check.

I don't do it. If I've forgotten a book, and it looks like it will be a good read, I'll read it again. Of course I'll remember the book after the first few pages or the first chapter, but if it was good, I don't mind re-reading it.

I developed a Book Database in Access just for this purpose and have been tracking my reading for several years with it. And pdurrant is right, it is a good idea.

I posted a copy of the DB here on MobileRead several years ago and I imagine it's still around for free downloading. That version had no book data entered into it so users could just input their own reading data.

If anyone would like a copy, let me know and I can email it to you.

That's all well and good, but when I realise I've just paid for a book I already have (and I did this as recently as Christmas, though in my defence, it was a book for my wife that I had previously bought her, so I wasn't keeping track) then I'm less than enamoured...

One of the many things I love about Amazon, Kindle specifically. They add this message to all of your Kindle purchases:

Quote:
Instant Order Update for Nyssa. You purchased this item on December 22, 2013. View this order.
This has helped me save more than a few extra dollars. They don't do that with everything you order, but thats understandable.

As far as I can tell, they appear to be doing this with everything I've ever ordered except Video On Demand. If it's an eBook, they don't even let you buy it again. Now, of course, if the supplier has changed, or there is even a slight difference in the product, this doesn't get triggered. But even when I go to re-order food items they give me that same "Instant Order Update" message.

Hmm.. I guess I don't reorder enough to see it in other places. That's very cool if they have indeed added it to everything they (Amazon) ship!
