Happy Holidays to everyone!
I just read CHANGELING, a fantastic YA paranormal by Molly Harper that is on sale for $0.99. It's superficially like Harry Potter in that the MC, a 14 YO girl, is unexpectedly discovered to have magical power, and ends up in a magical academy for girls, but the two books aren't otherwise alike. I'd link to it but something seems to be wonky with the linkmaker widget and it isn't working for me. Molly usually writes humorous PNRs, so this is a bit out of her norm, but I absolutely loved it and I don't usually like YA so that's saying a lot. The author also has one of her humorous PNRs on sale for $0.99 also - HOW TO DATE YOUR DRAGON. Also, If you haven't tried Tessa Dare, her first Spindle Cove book, A Night To Surrender, is on sale for $1.99. |

I'm 3 short of my 50 goal this year. I think 47 books are amazing considering everything that happened to me this year.
My top book was The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. This book changed my life literally. After reading the China Mack series by Tiffany Snow and this book I knew I finally had some answers. After much research I decided to talk to a family member and I found out when I was a young child I was diagnosed on the spectrum. This is why my mother pulled me out of school, why she was so overprotective of me I couldn't even leave her sight. This is why she never let me go to school or college. This is why she wouldn't let me get a job. This is why she always told me I couldn't do this or that physically because she was afraid I get hurt and this is why she kept books from me that I had to sneak them in till she realize she couldn't stop me in my teens. I don't have panic attacks, I get overstimulated which is why the Xanax never helped. This is why my husband and I never see eye to eye on so many things. My sister knew and she never told me. It took her death for someone to tell me the truth. I confronted my mother who refused to believe the diagnosis I was given and made my life hell growing up because of it. She apologized finally, but the last few months have been a journey of re-evaluate everything in my life and reflecting on all things that never made sense before. I found out it runs in the family. My cousin has a son on the spectrum as well which I found out at my sister's funeral. So when I said this book changed my life, It turned it upside down. I have to believe for the better in the long run. My Top series was The Loved At Stake series by Kerrilyn Sparks. Her happy vamps have gotten me through the months of grief and depression. I highly recommend this series for anyone who may not like paranormal. The family aspect mixed with fated mates make this a lovely warm series. It's funny and light-hearted. I'm still finishing up the last two books, the holidays and real life have gotten in the way of my reading. Last edited by Blossom; 12-28-2018 at 03:28 AM. |

I'm afraid the books that impressed me most this year weren't romances.
I've been recommending Mary Robinette Kowal's Lady Astronaut duology to anyone who will listen. It's interesting alternate history, science fiction, but also (IMO) very romantic. It's actually based on a short story she wrote that was so popular she was asked to write the prequels. Spoiler:
I listened to Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein for the first time this year and it just sucked me in. I thought it was very well narrated. It was fun and exciting and heart-breaking, all in one. And I just recently listened to Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. It started more slowly that the Wein book, and I'll be honest I wasn't sure at first I was going to like it, but I stayed with it and was very glad I did. I've probably re-listened to it 3-4 times again already. I was pulled in enough that I just wanted it to go on and learn how these people's lives played out after the story ended. I don't think I did much reading of new romances this year. Neither of Singh's novels wowwed me this year (the Guild Hunter novel ending just sucked). I can't even remember what either of JD Robb's stories were about this year, either. I read a couple of newer Krentz novels and liked them well enough. I just can't think of anything that really pulled me in. I've mostly been re-reading of old favorites. Last edited by FizzyWater; 12-29-2018 at 12:36 AM. |

Blossom, figuring all that out must have been a painful process for you, but if it helps you understand yourself and your relationships with others better, then it will be worth it in the end. It's amazing how books can unlock something so powerful as this one has for you. Best wishes for the new year, hopefully things will settle down a bit for you.
I read The Kiss Quotient and loved it. What struck me most about it was how Stella figures out in the end that she doesn't need to change herself and conform to societal norms in order to find love, but rather that she is worthy of love just as she is. That's a powerful message for all of us. |

That's how I've come to look at the process as well. I've known my whole life I was different but I never could put it into words when people asked. Now I can. The dyslexia, dyspraxia and other dis words all tie into it. I am free to be me and when I have sensory overload I now know what it is and how to treat it making it easier to get through them. I am working on my social cues and when hubby is in the right frame of mind we can communicate better he no longer expects me to read his mind. I also loved how Stella came to accept herself in the end. You know the author found out she was autistic while writing this book. It's such an amazing story. The only other series I read with a heroine like her was The China Mack series by Tiffany Snow. It's more romantic suspense and there is a love triangle which is the author's thing. I just love how diversifed romance is becoming as more publishers accept it as the norm. Sent from my Nexus 7 |
