$3.95 -- The Bourbon Kings -- JR Ward/ Alexander Cendese --> 12.8 hrs/ R-4.3 --> romance

Quote:
The Bourbon Kings --> Bourbon Kings Series (book 1 of 2)

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($7.99)

The number-one New York Times best-selling author of Black Dagger Brotherhood delivers the first novel in an enthralling new series set amid the shifting dynamics of a Southern family defined by wealth and privilege - and compromised by secrets, deceit, and scandal....

For generations the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege - as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.

For Lizzie King, Easterly's head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted - and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right. Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane's beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.

As family tensions - professional and intimately private - ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.

$4.99 -- The Third Target -- Joel Rosenberg/ David de Vries --> 11.7 hrs/ R-4.5 --> suspense

Quote:
The Third Target --> JB Collins Series (book 1 of 3)

Whispersync: Audible ($4.99) | Kindle ($8.83)

When New York Times foreign correspondent J. B. Collins hears rumors that an al-Qaeda splinter cell has captured a cache of chemical weapons inside Syria, he knows this is a story he must pursue at all costs. Does the commander of the jihadist faction really have the weapons? If so, who is the intended target? The U.S.? Israel? Or could it be Jordan?

With tensions already high, the impending visit of the American president to the region could prove to be the spark that sets off an explosion of horrendous proportions. Knowing that terrorist forces have already toppled two regimes in the region, can Collins uncover the truth before it's too late? Or will the terrorists succeed in setting their sights on the third and final target?

Hmmm, I didn't notice that. They're still in NJ, so maybe Amazon is requiring them to keep time with the mothership on deals. It's less confusing that way.

$1.99 -- Willnot -- James Sallis/ Kevin Kenerly --> 4.5 hrs/ R-n/a --> suspense

Quote:
Whispersync: no deals at this time | Audible

A brilliant new protagonist and his memorable community are introduced in the latest masterpiece by acclaimed novelist James Sallis.

In his celebrated career, James Sallis has created some of the most finely drawn protagonists in crime fiction, all of them thoughtful observers of the human condition: Lew Griffin, the black New Orleans private investigator; retired detective John Turner; the unnamed wheelman in Drive. Dr. Lamar Hale will now join the ranks of Sallis’ finest characters.

In the woods outside the town of Willnot, the remains of several people have suddenly been discovered, unnerving the community and unsettling Hale, the town’s all-purpose general practitioner, surgeon, and conscience. At the same time, Bobby Lowndes—a man being followed by the FBI—mysteriously reappears in his hometown at Hale’s door. Over the ensuing months, the daily dramas Hale faces as he tends to his town and to his partner, Richard, collide with the swerves and turns of life in Willnot. And when a gunshot aimed at Lowndes critically wounds Richard, Hale’s world is truly upended.

In his inimitable spare style, James Sallis conjures indelible characters and scenes that resonate long after they appear. “You live with someone year after year, you think you’ve heard all the stories,” Lamar observes, “but you never have.”

$4.95 -- Under the Harrow -- Flynn Berry/ Fiona Hardingham --> 6.1 hrs/ R-3.5 --> thriller

Quote:
Whispersync: no deals at this time | Audible

A debut psychological thriller about a young woman who finds her sister brutally murdered, and the shocking incident in their past that may hold the key to finding the killer.

When Nora takes the train from London to visit her sister in the countryside, she expects to find her waiting at the station or at home cooking dinner. But when she walks into Rachel’s familiar house, what she finds is entirely different: her sister has been the victim of a brutal murder.

Stunned and adrift, Nora can’t return to her former life. An unsolved assault in the past has shaken her faith in the police, and she can’t trust them to find her sister’s killer. Haunted by the murder and the secrets she unravels, she is under the harrow—distressed and in danger. As Nora’s fear turns to obsession, she becomes as unrecognizable as the sister her investigation uncovers.

A riveting psychological thriller and a haunting exploration of the fierce love between two sisters, the distortions of grief, and the terrifying power of the past, Under the Harrow marks the debut of an extraordinary new writer.

$5.95 -- The Political Brain -- Drew Westen/ Anthony Heald --> 16.6 hrs/ R-4.0 --> psychology

Quote:
The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation

Whispersync: Audible ($3.99) | Kindle ($11.99)

The Political Brain is a groundbreaking scientific investigation into how the mind and brain really work and how it affects the way candidates win and lose elections.

In politics, when reason and emotions collide, emotion invariably wins. In this landmark book, scientist and psychologist Drew Westen shows how electorates vote not with their heads but with their hearts, and how the marketplace that matters most is the marketplace of emotion - filled with values, images, analogies, moral sentiments, and moving oratory.

The first serious investigation into how emotions affect voter behavior, The Political Brain reveals how the political landscape would change if candidates began with a 21st-century understanding of how the mind and brain really work.

Mandela: An Audio History (commemorative edition)

Book Length: SYNC download= 1h 17m | Audible= 1h 17m

Reference Guide: 32-page booklet w/ historic photos and transcript of audio program

Recognized as one of the most comprehensive oral histories of apartheid ever broadcast (NPR, BBC, CBC, SABC), Mandela: An Audio History tells the story of the struggle against apartheid through rare sound recordings. The series weaves together more than 50 first-person interviews with an unprecedented collection of archival sound: a rare recording of the 1964 trial that resulted in Mandela’s life sentence; a visit between Mandela and his family secretly taped by a prison guard; marching songs of guerilla soldiers; government propaganda films; and pirate radio broadcasts from the African National Congress (ANC).

Once thought lost forever, Radio Diaries producer Joe Richman unearthed a treasure trove of these historic recordings in the basement archive of the South African Broadcasting Corporation. Ultimately, over 50 hours of archival recordings and many more hours of contemporary interviews with the living witnesses to South Africa’s turbulent history have gone into the creation of one of the most moving audio documentaries ever produced.

Things Fall Apart

Book Length: SYNC download= 6h 23m | Audible= 6h 30m

With over eight million copies in print world wide, Achebe's work is a definitive novel in African literature. Filled with powerful language and finely drawn characters, Things Fall Apart also shimmers with the sounds and sights of village life.

Okonkwo is born into poverty, with a wastrel for a father. Driven by ambition, he works tirelessly to gain the prosperity of many fields and wives, and prestige in his village. But he is harsh as well as diligent. As he sees the traditions of his people eroded by white missionaries and government officials, he lashes out in anger.

Things Fall Apart traces the growing friction between village leaders and Europeans determined to save the heathen souls of Africa. But its hero, a noble man who is driven by destructive forces, speaks a universal tongue.

Somehow I missed Audible's announcement about the change (yes, I'm being sarcastic).

They should have left it alone and changed the mothership from Pacific to Eastern Time. The east coast is the only one that really matters anyway.

I'm scooping the tubemonkey!

Downpour has 100 science fiction audiobooks for only $5.95 each. Here's their webpage about the sale.

If you lived on the east coast, I might not have scooped you. Since you live on the west coast, you're probably eating dinner right now.
