The battery swelled, putting just enough pressure on the back of the display to break it. Either a bad battery or a bad battery management chip/firmware. If you lay a straight-edge across the back, top to bottom, you can probably find that the back of the case is no longer flat. |

![]() May God grant it that our paths never cross again, because if I ever catch that fly... ![]() Now seriously. I may be very wrong, but I really wouldn't be surprised if these Kindles sold in Brazil were actually refurbished from some other country. Maybe it was just plain bad luck that mine came with this problem, but I don't know. Quote:
I ended up resetting it (the line persisted, of course) and then gave Amazon a call. I was expecting to receive instructions on how to send them the device, for them to check and all, so I was very, very surprised to know that, since there's no place that fixes it in Brazil, they simply blocked the device (the access to my account that is, because the device is still working) and refunded me the whole price I paid on store credit ![]() So I have a device that still works, and credit that I may use to buy another device (in case this one gets worse) or even books. It's like they earn so much money, something like this is not even worthy of their attention. I'm in complete awe of this system. |

anything with a straight edge -
even a sheet of paper - look between back and edge of paper standing "on edge" (hold it) - as if you where looking for a crack in the door. Our signature certificate is still on the device, you can re-install everything if you wish. |

This is my current situation: the jailbreak is OK, the dummy works and writes the .txt file when using mrpi. It's also possible to install the hotfix, python and the screensavers hack with mrpi. KUAL also install and launches, but its "install mrpi packages" button does nothing. It also recognizes KOReader on its menu, but neither KUAL nor KPVbooklet are able to launch that application.
Please note that I'm not asking for help. I just thought I should report back because maybe it interests anyone. |

Jailbreak + other stuff installed Updated to 5.8.9 Used the "Reset" function (at Amazon's request) And then the things quoted above. Hmm... You say that "KUAL installs" but in some cases does not work as intended - - I suppose you mean install the booklet version of KUAL(this is an 8th. gen. device) and the document version only has to be copied. Yes? No? I don't see where you re-installed KPVbooklet. I suppose you did and just didn't mention it. Now KPVbooklet failing to setup the document<->reader relationship correctly in a new firmware version is not too surprising (since that database might change at any version without notice). = = = = Note: We recently learned that firmware builds for the 8th. generation devices in Germany behave differently than those downloaded from Amazon.com(usa). Did your 5.8.9 update come from a Amazon download server other than the USA servers? = = = = Thanks for all of the additional information. I would have expected everything to resume proper function after the re-install the world step. Guess I was wrong. Well, at least we have the exceptions included in this thread now. Yes, you're right, I used the booklet version of KUAL and installed it through mrpi. The "KUAL" doc that appears after the reboot opens normally, without any of those error signs, it just doesn't actually does what it should (like the "install mrpi packages" button doesn't work, the "Restart framework now" for the screensavers hack also does nothing, etc).
I also noticed the logs my KUAL creates have a lot of lines that ends in "Permission denied", for example, "./bin/mrinstaller.sh: line 794: can't create /dev/console: Permission denied". I can send you the file if you want. I installed KPVbooklet too, yes (through mrpi, of course). Maybe it's worth to note that it worked on KT3 3.8.9 before yesterday, and I think it's actually still working (what isn't working imo is both KUAL and KOReader). The 5.8.9 update file I used came from the American site, the page called "Kindle (8th Generation) Software Updates". Also, I don't know if you remember but I said yesterday that when I called them the operator blocked my device, probably to prevent it to be sold again or something like that. So maybe these things that are not working are a result of the device being unregistered, instead of because the whole "resetting after jailbreak" thing (just an opinion here). |

Amazon does disable features/functions if the device is not registered.
Search the phrase: "fake registration" or It may be indexed already in the "Master Index" IIRC, it is all one big thread - Start at the most recent end and scroll up - there are at least two file formats, you want the most recent one described. (Of course, 5.8.9 might have changed the format of that file, but we don't know until someone tries. ![]() |
