I was really hoping the next page button was moved to right side.

I guess the rumor (or was it an official announcement) that Amazon has the exclusivity of the Pearl screens for 6 months (starting when ? from DX Graphite launch ?) is true...Pocketglobal already said their new products won't have Pearl screens (at the beginning at least), and now Sony...

A touchscreen for highlighting and annotations would be very nice, but right now I'd only consider upgrading from my 505 to a device with the Pearl screen. If the new Sonys don't have them then that's a real problem.

If the screen is as good as on the 505, then I think the touch functionality and robust casing are a fair trade for Kindle3's wireless connectivity and Pearl screen.
I hope the 650 is the same size as the 600 so I can use my current cover when I upgrade. |

I would be surprised if these weren't pearl screens. eInk are manufacturing them at the 5 inch size, which Amazon don't use.
Still, I'm going to a K3 next, and I'll see how I get along with that. I don't make that much use of the touchscreen on the 900, except for page turns (not an issue with a button) and dictionary look-up. |

You know, the more I think about it, the more skeptical I am that those are authentic screen shots. The phrasing and items in the new feature list seems a bit off (for instance-- 10 language translation dictionaries seems like an odd thing to add) and the terms "full clear touch screen" and "intelligent zoom" seem too casual-- I'd think that they would come up with trademarkable, brandable buzz words. And now that someone pointed it out, I see that is a highly unflattering block of text shown on the "350." That isn't just a ragged left margin-- that right margin looks like it has been shredded by Freddie Krueger's cat. If you look at the text shown in screen images at Sony Style, they show nicely formatted, fully-justified text-- so why would they showcase an ugly mess?

10 language dictionaries is pretty much in line with their international presence and promise of entering Japanese market.

It looked more to me like a covert snap of an internal or under-NDA presentatation, than their intended consumer marketing. Still, odd that they wouldn't say "New eInk Pearl screen with 50% more contrast" if it was.

Also, what are those things that look like little buttons along the inside of the bottom screen bezel on the Pocket Edition?

Under the Sony slides it says: "Screen images simulated. Product images representative."
Just to cut the "Are the screenshots real?" discussion.... ![]() Btw, the new readers without Pearl panels would be a waste of Sony's shareholders money. Every review of the devices would mention them using a previous (read obsolete) generation of e-ink panels. Btw, I am their customer if they deliver the Pearl panel, touch screen without readability impact, WiFi (I can live w/o 3G) and an acceptable price. Maybe smudge resistance, too. Also, it should play at least PS2 games... Only the last one is a joke. ![]() |
