I read for a few minutes on the Skybridge of the Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. They only let you up there for like 15 minutes and then they herd you towards the elevator down. I was one of the first to be herded, so out came the nook. The gift shop had tons of books stacked in the shape of the towers, which I particularly enjoyed.

That sounds awesome. Whenever I think of that place, I always think of the movie Entrapment with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones. The end of a great career and the beginning of a...moderately decent one.

It was pretty cool, although it definitely had nothing on that bridge-crossing-Christmas-lights-acrobatics scene in Entrapment. And CZJ got an Oscar for Chicago! That has to count for more than moderately decent, right?

Most "extreme" place I ever read an ebook was at the top platform of a 200 ft old military communications tower. This was up in the hills of Fort Greely, Alaska. Me and my partner were doing a military contract to see if the towers (built in the 50's) were in good enough condition to be retrofitted into cell phone towers (because the Army slogan is why spend money building something new when you can repair something old).

I had already climbed to the top, and we set up a winch and pulley system to lift a bucket of tools up and down. Because the tower was so old the climbing safety system they used back then didn't work with the equipment we use now days, so it was pretty much just a 200 ft free climb up a ladder.

Got to the last day of work and the bulb I had to replace at the top was missing a part I needed, so my buddy had to drive back to the inhabited part of the base (about an hour round trip) to see if they happened to have it. We decided it was a needless risk for me to climb back down, so he sent my 505 and a bottle of mountain dew up in the bucket so I had something to do while I waited.

On a ski lift at Monarch Mountain in Colorado. It is a small ski area and most of the lifts are pretty slow. Hard to do on a cold day, but when the weather was nice, out came the Sony.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. Traffic was also pretty good. Can't say I followed her career too closely.

Badass. You must've had a great view from up there too. Maybe you could even see Russia or Momma Grizzly. Sounds like exciting work to say the least. Did you do a lot of that kind of stuff for the army?

Yup, the military paid really well. We were at that exact same site the year before -- but in the middle of winter -- when one of the worst winter storms I've ever been caught in swept through. The temp (with wind chill) had been dropping to -65 F (though the "real" temp was probably something around -25 or -30). We had been told by base personnel that we had arrived right in the middle of their yearly 2-week wind storms that rip through the hills.

We had to keep our diesel van running all day and night, for the week we were there, for fear that it would freeze solid and not start up again.

The most extreme place I've read was in a restaurant, while waiting for the food to arrive. This doesn't sound extreme, until I tell you that my wife was with me and had nothing to do. She wanted to "spend some quality time and just talk" But I had nothing to say. Neither did she, but she can't admit it sometimes. So I whipped out my then-new Kindle and read about two sentences before she ripped into me.

It was pretty extreme. Not recommended.

Ha! Definitely not seeking a divorce. I love her quite a bit.

foreverjuly: not trying to win. Just trying to open minds to a different kind of extreme.

Now that I think of it, Kate said one thing that made me eligible to her was that I read. She didn't care what, but she loved that I read. I wish I had thought to bring that up on that fateful day in the restaurant.

Ahh, the subtle ways the male gender is incapable of remembering the really important things when they are truly needed.

That just means you were going to have to listen. This is regarded as an opportunity for self improvement by your partner. If you make the mistake of pointing out any of her foibles then this will just be regarded as a full on character attack. If the same situation happens in future then I'd use small headphones and switch on the TTS though it's important to look at your partner while nodding sagely at the same time.

Who's gonna up the ante now? I'm really thrilled about what will be the tale of the next hardcore reader. Maybe Orpheus will come and tell us that he was reading while taking Eurydiche back to the Earth?
