Very true, but I can't imagine that many people want to be treated so negatively. Of course, I tend to be a bit of a Pollyanna.

I do too, with a bit of a variation that I think suits me more than my given name!

I love the name Michael and would have liked to have given my son that name but my aggravating oldest brother has the name and the rights to it in our family!

I've always told my students to be proud of who they are because there isn't anyone else like them anywhere even if they have the same name as someone else (multiple children with the same name in one classroom can cause some confusion and angst with very young children, especially when they've been the little prince or princess at home for their formative years ).

Okay, thinking up a realistic example-- say your mate has had a really bad day. Say if you've had a bad day, you would want to have company, so you stay right at said mate's side. But-- it so happens-- how the mate prefers to be treated after a bad day is to be left alone to unwind, and all the time you are attached at mate's hip, mate is thinking "would you please just go the hell away for one freaking minute?"

That is a case of "doing unto others as you would have them do unto you" and you are annoying the heck out of the other by doing it. Better would be to "do unto others as they would have you do unto them."

You can think up any number of possible situations on your own, it isn't "people wanting to be treated negatively", it is other people having different ideas of positive treatment than you.

Yes, but as a general maxim, it's hard to beat, and as your link shows, it transcends cultures and has withstood the test of time.

Another link on that sight focuses more on philosophers and others who have given us some form of the Golden Rule. I can't be sure if all of these quotes are accurate, however, because they don't reference the original sources; but I've long felt that Kant's Categorical Imperative can be reduced to a clever re-phrasing of the Golden Rule.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/reciproc3.htm

To be sure, there are probably exceptions for every rule, and entire books could be written on all the nuances and situational modifications that a thoughtful moral agent would do well to take into consideration in its application; but for a summation of ethical behavior that's easily understood and fits on a t-shirt, IMO the Golden Rule is without peer.

Considering your mate is a friend, you should know how he would like to be treated, even if it is different from how you would want a friend to help you through a difficult day. As Tom has stated, every rule has it's exceptions but for a jumping off point in dealing with others, the Golden Rule. . .well, RULES!

I am guilty of not reading EVERYTHING here, so it seems appropriate to throw my 2 cents in.

1) Everyone repeat after me:
"Anyone that disagrees with me is an idiot."

2) And now:
"I will never argue with an idiot."

If you do not agree with this solution see 1 and 2 above. Problem solved.

My wife and I figured out the easy solution to this - we both put the seat AND the lid down, and train the kids to do the same.

Having a dog in the house does help get this one ingrained, I must admit.

She uses the bowl intended for her in the kitchen, rather the bowl intended for 'waste' in the bathroom. Crazy, I know.
