It's not really for me, as a reader, although I am quite interested now with the keyboard attachment. But the casual reader/surfer/general computer user will eat this thing up. That price point of $499 is the biggest surprise of all. It's aggressive and will siphon off both book readers and netbook buyers away from other products. If you're happy with 10 hours battery life, then I doubt eye strain will even come into the buying decision.

Those are pretty damn good prices IMO--at least for the WiFi only devices.

$130 seems like a high premium for 3G when you'd have to pay for a data plan on top of it (though I suppose there will be deals with a contract to knock some off of that).
Hmmm... If I were really desirous of a 3G device, the 16GB version isn't all that badly priced. However, as I don't plan to use it as a 3G device, I'd rather sink the $699 for the 64GB WiFi version. Would be like having a Kindle and a 10" iPod Touch all wrapped into one device. And as I'm currently using a 1st-gen iPod Touch (8GB), I think even the $499 16GB WiFi model would probably suit my needs. I'm a-savin' my nickels!

I also think that it's important to note that Random House was not amongst the list of partnered publishers.

My laptop cost less, has a higher screen resolution, better lcd backlight (led) and a lot of more power.

What a giant rip off ... but typical Apple behaviour. They will most probably find another bunch of brainless people with too much money to buy this overpriced product.

Here it is folks, the Apple iPad. The screen is gorgeous, tilting is responsive, and the thing is insanely thin and light. We're still fiddling with it, more impressions to come!

It's an optical illusion, but just seeing the depth of pages makes the iBook app feel more like a book than a Kindle ever did for me. The text is sharp, and while the screen is bright, it doesn't seem to strains the eyes—but time will tell on that.
But hey, you probably see more from where you are sitting and laughing

IMO

I will not be in line to buy one of these devices for several reasons.

1. I purchased an ereader because the screen technology either e-ink or reflective TFT displays are much easier on the eyes.

2. I can purchase an ebook reader and netbook that is expandable for less than the Ipad. I am not locked in with NON-expandable memory. I can not get 64 gig of storage without 3g and contracts. If I buy a $499 ipad I have 16 gig and if I want to upgrade I have to sell it and buy another.

3. It is bad enough that many ebooks are more expensive than printed books. Apple is going to drive the prices of ebooks even higher. They have a 30% markup so a print book sells for $7.95, an ebook on Amazon sells for $9.95 and the same book on Apple will sell for $14.95. NOT GOOD.

4. I buy Apple and they have a closed system that has me by the shorthairs because their system is closed. With many of the ereader companies perched on the edge to release the OS as open source, I will stay with an open source ereader.

Somehow the phrase "Dance with the Devil" comes to mind.

I'm going to come across as a heretic here, but I didn't find the e ink screen on my iLiad all that readable, especially in dim lighting (e.g. in the evening with a book light to try to avoid keeping my partner awake). And while the iLiad had an open OS in theory, in practice there was very little development going on there. I'm much more optimistic that someone will come up with good PDF markup software, and perhaps even citation-gathering software, on this platform. (By "citation" software, I mean that I highlight text in a PDF journal article and tag it, and the software builds a database for me of quotes with appropriate citations drawn from metadata, searchable by text or by tag. Hey, I'm getting ready to do a dissertation. It would be worth it to me to buy this if it could make that process more manageable. That was why I bought the iLiad-- and it failed for the purpose.)

That's very good news. There will be more for the rest of us! But, I'm afraid that, even if you DO NOT WANT it, there will still be lots, and I mean, LOTS of people, willing to buy it!
So far, it looks really interesting.

The video of the iBook reading experience makes me all nostalgic for paper books Damn, now I really want to buy one of these things.

Let's please avoid calling all users of any given product things like "brainless" or "fanboys." Different products meet the needs of different people. If you don't like the product, you can say so and why, but there's no need to insult anyone else.

"The display measures 9.7 in. diagonal, the screen is about 19 cm × 13 cm tall and displays 960 × 640 pixels, so it has 2:3 format."

check
