I wonder how PDFs (simple fiction PDFs) will look in landscape mode.

Ah, that was secret. Well, it certainly is... long. Horisontal view does look promising, but I can't see it's offering that much over the 600 unless you can take advantge of the wireless connectivity.

Odd size screen, but hey, it's something new.

The engadget page says this

Quote:
We asked to see the Daily Edition without its cover, but apparently it's built into the device -- though you can change it out for an alternative, and the battery is replaceable
I wonder if that "replaceable battery" part is just a guess, or true?

I do think the library access feature is huge. This "e-borrowing" feature is gonna hit Amazon where it hurts IMO. I heard a guy on a train yesterday showing his Kindle to a couple of friends -- So-o-o-o cool that he can downlad free previews of books. Uh-huh. And then you have to buy the books from Amazon. While I've been borrowing my books free on my Reader for quite some time now!

Still not inclined to buy the Daily Reader when available--don't need wireless. I'm leaning towards the Pocket 300 (portability and clarity are key for me.) Will check one out in person this week, I hope.

I get library books for my Kindle all the time. I have to convert them but it's really easy.

Actually I like the new size very much. Remind me of a trade paperback. If only the screen was as good as the 505 or at least better than the 600.

I guess this is a dummy. As you might know, e-ink screens bigger than 6" are very rare because of very bad weather in Taiwan (earthquakes and torrential rain) and have not been produced yet in big numbers (that's probably why the Daily will only be available in November)

According to Paul at TeleRead, the Ebook Library software 3.0 is to be launched today. Does that mean they are just announcing it or that it will be available for download today?

Also, has anyone critiqued the screen clarity of the new readers in comparison to the older ones? I know there was comparison between the 505 and the 600, but that's a little like comparing Granny Smith apples to Golden Delicious apples. I want to know if the clarity has improved from the 700 to the 600. Anybody?

Yep, at least not on top where the 505 and 600 had them.

I was waiting to see if they had been relocated before I mentioned it though.

Ah ha, so presumably my suspicion was correct, they were merely moved from the top of the screen.

Other than that I don't see why I would pay $100 more for this than the 600... well, it is a bit bigger (taller screen so more lines per page) and comes with a cover.'

I was so hoping for a 9inch device with awesome PDF support.

I rarely use my 3G Kindle connection to do anything but get content. I do use Wikipedia sometimes and that is all kinds of awesome but it's the combination of sample chapter + instant download that makes 3G a winner for me. Hopefully Sony's doing samples. I love loading up on samples and then buying the book I want after reading the sample. 3G means I don't have to be at home or near a computer. Plus it looks like they want to get into the periodical market. 3G delivery is great for that. If the screen looks good, I think this is a great play on Sony's part.

Wasn't the Kindle 2 originally touted as having a replaceable battery, only to find out it wasn't user replaceable?

It is still not an option for mainstream, casual users on the Kindle. And Amazon cannot market a feature that involves converting formats and/or stripping DRM. Uh-uh. Just because it "can" be done doesn't mean it is a market advantage.

For us on this board that's good but not for the average user not so good. How many people from the million Kindles out there would know about that?
