The smaller the print run, the more expensive it is. I see print books becoming a luxury item, and those cheapo grocery store paperback genre books simply ceasing to exist altogether as people download the even cheaper ebook versions instead.

I don't see that with books in English - the potential market, as in, everyone who can read English is still huge. Danish publishers still somehow make money even if their potential market is very, very much smaller. Books are more expensive here, granted, but still not luxury items.

I think the biggest boon to eBooks is the fact that they are less likely to go out of print. Most pBooks are now out of print and not available except in the used market and collectors market. eBooks are helping to solve this problem however publishers need to revisit their out of print but copyrighted catalog and make these available.

oh yes, absolutely !!!! there are many books i would like to read but they are out of print and impossible to find. and then there are those which are out of print, and a few copies can be found, but for outrageous prices. i can't wait for the day when ALL books are available, because an e-text by definition can never be "out of print". hopefully the publishers will start making their back catalogues available in the next few years. even if they only sell a fraction of their new release sales, it will still be profitable for them for minimal investment.

I like to collect things. If I had a big house I would have a library but most people who love books don't have the space. Using ebooks is a way to read and not have to store on shelves. I read some books over and over again because I love them but I have to choose who to keep. My space goes to my big/coffee table art books and some favorite magazines (Victoria). Even some of my favorite magazines are now digital (Macworld, Entertainment, Elle). I'm waiting for National Geo to go digital monthly. At one time I had so many of them they were in boxes but I got rid of most and only kept the ones that mean the most to me, about 20. My library is now filled with DVDs and CDs which I am also changing into digital format. I will have to take a picture of my livingroom which is where my books live.

Spot on. There have been many books in the past that I've not been able to read for lack of a version in print, or prohibitive costs on buying the original. It would be glorious if e-books made that situation irrelevant to the reader.

Exactly. You do get it. They are "out of print" books that you can still get.

Here's a pair of 13 feet high libraries I've made of a weird tiger oak. One has a cd rack that holds 850. Dvds didn't exist then. There is also a track on the middle of the library that allows a ladder to roll sideways.

Forgive the quality of pictures. That was well before digital.

I'd love to have a digital version of National Geographic... but I fear that won't happen until there are color e-ink screens in wide use... and I'm not sure it should. Part of the joy of Nat Geo is the amazing photography, and many of the pics lose something being converted to b&w if they weren't shot with that in mind.

I have such a small house that I am hoping that my ereader will make my library obsolete. It will make reading and finding a book that I am looking for so much easier than digging the boxes out from under the bed hoping I've got the one with the book that I'm looking for in it.
