Why? Do you notice some actual issue with not using the GPU?

I do actually. The animation sometimes stutters. It didn't stutter in 8.99.1.

If you mean the animation of the bookshelf then that has no connection, this GPU usage is for the viewer and editor preview panel only. If you mean something else, then do elaborate.

I have an issue with the bookshelf height. I'd like to have an option to show X shelves per screen. What is happening is that bookshelves are not showing correctly and part of the covers are not showing. So if calibre was do full shelves, then it would display properly. This is with the booksshelves set to auto. Set to a fixed height also doesn't work because it's too much hassle to try to figure out a size that works.

I've never been able to discern any noticeable differences between Calibre's/Sigil's QtWebEngine rendering of epubs with its GPU acceleration enabled/disabled. I think people just seem to get it in their head that they're somehow being "cheated" by needing to disable it. *shrug*

I have an old Microsoft Surface Pro 2 that runs Windows 10. It's running an Intel i5-4300U (1.9 GHz). It runs Windows 10. It is slower without the GPU then with.

Try running calibre on a 4th gen i5-4300U (1.9 GHz) and you'll see slower without the GPU. Also, it only has 8GB RAM.

On my main laptop, I don't see a difference without the GPU in the editor using an i7-11800H (2.30 GHz) and 16GB RAM.

Now, one other thing I've noticed is memory usage. If I load an eBook in editor in the beta, it took roughly 4GB. If I load the same eBook in 8.16.2 in the editor, it took about 2GB. I don't know if this is because calibre is no longer using the GPU and thus not using the GPU's RAM or a difference in the versions of calibre.

Set it manualy by try and error in settings. Since you don't need to close the Preference dialog, you can see the result of the new height after validate it in the Look & Feel, it can be made easly. Maybe tedious, but hat the best option.
Automatic is nice, but is way too capricious at my tast to reliable.

My Reading Goal plugin uses QWebengine to display graphs. I just installed the beta version and it gives me this error when first opening the graph:
Code:
[25684:19184:0105/111126.457:ERROR:gpu_channel_manager.cc(966)] Failed to create GLES3 context, fallback to GLES2.
[25684:19184:0105/111126.457:ERROR:gpu_channel_manager.cc(977)] ContextResult::kFatalFailure: Failed to create shared context for virtualization.
The graph still shows. This is a plain HTML page using CSS to create a bar chart. But then, when I try to see the daily graph for a giving month, calibre just quits with no error displayed. The daily graph uses Google Chart api.

It's not going to work unless I somehow manage to find the exact number in px. And if I then change the size of the view, I then have to find the number all over again. That's just not going to happen. This is why automatic needs to do it.

If automatic doesn't do it, then the bookself view is (IMHO) worthless because the books need to fully view all the time and not a partial view where you cannot read the text fully.

@thiago.eec: Is your plugin using Qt WebEngine within the calibre process? If so it should not do so as this is not supported. It needs to launch a worker process, similar to how the ToC edit tool works in calibre.

I've just found a number that kind of works but not well enough. I can start at the top and see two full shelves. I can scroll using the arrows on the scroll bar and it works. But if I click in the scroll bar to scroll or use the wheel on the mouse or drag the scrollbar, it doesn't work. So the problem becomes scrolling enough where I am not wanting to have to keep clicking the arrow to get where I want.

However, if automatic sorted this when I stopped scrolling, that would work, Otherwise, it doesn't work and remains seriously broken.

What doesnt work? Scrolling by dragging the scrollbar or using a mouse wheel/touchpad scrolls by pixels not shelves. It's up to you to end your scrolling in whatever position you want.
