https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Templa..._Kindle_models The hardware and firmware between the PW3 and the future actual PW7 will be vastly different, and it really does matter that the name is correct so that you can be given the correct advice on how to handle issues. It's akin to owning something with an old SBC 350 motor and asking how to fix an LS1. They are entirely different motors with different problems and solutions. UPDATE:
this seemed to work: 1) Create a blank file in Notepad titled DO_FACTORY_RESTORE Remove the .txt extension from the file you created in File Explorer 2) Connect the Kindle to your computer using a USB cable. 3) Copy the file you created into the root directory (don't put into any folder) of your Kindle. Do a reset of the Kindle by holding down on the power button (20 secs, not the short restart) till the Kindle restarts. It should (fingers crossed) perform a factory reset. |

Did you see the Mesquito loader and the jailbreak text output when visiting the store? If not, you'll need to make sure you properly copied all the files and that the .active_content_sandbox/store/resource/cachedResources/index.html file on the Kindle is the same as the one in your local WinterBreak folder. If the jailbreak ran, make sure you're putting Update_hotfix_universal.bin in the main directory of your Kindle (not a subdirectory), that you haven't disabled OTA updates using something like renameotabin, and that you're installing the hotfix using the standard "Update your Kindle" option in settings. |

Success on Basic 10, Paperwhite 10, and Paperwhite 11
I successfully implemented WinterBreak to:
Basic 10 on firmware 5.16.2.1.1 Paperwhite 10 on firmware 5.17.1 and Paperwhite 11 on firmware 5.16.5 the jailbreaking and applying the hotfix went smoothly on the 3 devices, but I had trouble with MRPI and KUAL. had to repeat the procedure more than once, sometimes after restarting the kindle to start it. I used MRPI and Koreader from this post https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...5&postcount=11 and for KUAL. sometimes KUAL 2.7.33 worked. sometimes KUAL Coplate worked. and some other times I had to start with installing KUAL 2.7.33, then install KUAL Coplate afterwards, so that the kual shortcut appear in my library. the main problem that had me repeat the process is that (;log mrpi) in the search box didn't work every time, sometimes it showed search results as if I'm searching for a book in library. but after rebooting (some times after applying the hot fix again then rebooting) it worked. after success with all the devices, I tested the update to see if the jailbreak would survive. I updated both Basic 10, and Paperwhite 11 to 5.17.1.0.3. unfortunately it didn't survive directly, even after applying the hotfix again afterwards and trying to re-install KUAL and MRPI. I had to repeat the jailbreaking and the whole process from the start as described above. but in the end -thanks god- It was another success with the updated firmwares. Thanks a lot HackerDude and hondabf for your efforts. and thanks to all other users who try to help. may god bless you all Thanks |

I successfully applied this jailbreak to a PW4 on 5.17.1.0.3. Everything is working except KOReader (just waiting for working builds).
KOReader is the only real reason I want a jailbroken device. Should I consider downgrading to a pre-hf firmware, 5.16.2.x, for performance and/or compatibility? Is that safe to do from 5.17.x? I'm not looking for help/instructions performing the downgrade, just advice on whether it's a mistake to try. Thanks all for your hard work! |

* The PW2, AKA the Kindle Paperwhite 6th Generation, was released in September 2013. If you have a Kindle older than that, you should know what you have and be able to pick the right version listed on that page. Personally I wouldn't bother with the jailbreak unless I knew what I wanted it for. Why put yourself through the trouble without a good reason? (Note: wanting to freeze updates on a known-jailbreak-able version instead of just letting Amazon do what it wants is a good reason, but in that case you don't need to install anything but the hotfix, MRPI, KUAL, and renameotabin as described in the Kindle Modding wiki). In addition to the stuff described in the wiki, I have KOReader, the KOL-V1.3.6-gd057b4d-20231106.tar.xz build of the booklet launcher, and the coversetter extension to MRPI. That's enough for me. |

The kindlehf KOReader nightlies work just fine. There may be a wait for an official release. The gap from the current release was from July to November. You could be waiting a couple of months depending on how ready they are for a new full release.

When I try to extract the Winterbreak file to my Kindle I get the error message "The file name you specified is not valid or too long." Am I doing something wrong?

Big thank your for your efforts. My kindle is finally free from the shackles of amazon.I installed on PW4 and it is working properly. I also installed koreader, which is the main reason for wanting to root my device. So far everything is working.

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and I have the same problem as tekkasit, but with a Kindle Voyage: Quote:
When the Kindle is switched on, a pair of files is written every minute. The file names have the following patterns:
I can open books, but because the error messages occur every minute, the Kindle's memory fills up quickly. I have not yet carried out a factory reset. What can I do to get the Kindle working again? Last edited by carp; 01-05-2025 at 03:47 PM. |

I see commits from as recently as yesterday regarding HF support, so I was planning to just wait to see if it's still broken for me when those dry up. |
