Interesting. I always eject from the tray, so maybe I'll try ejecting from Explorer next time to see if it behaves differently.

A few minutes? Maybe 5 at times? Certainly not more than 10. Since I'd noticed the slowness, I just do other things on the computer & then come back to it. So I'm not really paying attention to exactly how long.

The safely remove hardware thing never seemed to work correctly for me (on the kobo), so I always do it from explorer. So, yeah, I'd recommend trying that.

If my device is connected to Calibre, I use "smart eject" (there is a plugin for that). If it connected to my PC without using Calibre, I right-clicked and ejected the device from Explorer as per your comment. (I'm using Windows 10).

I'm using Calibre 6.27 under Linux (OpenSUSE 15.5 and KDE). I've not experienced this bug. I just loaded 8 books from Calibre to my Sage and disconnected from Calibre. The books were imported before I even had a chance to unplug.

I can confirm that ejecting from Explorer releases the lock screen on Windows 7, too. It's only ejecting from the tray that requires you to unplug the cable to dismiss the "Connected and Charging" screen.

I tested this in Win 11 and find the same behavior. Never knew there was difference between the two.

Me neither. I've never ejected a USB device from the Explorer window before; I've always used the tray.

I've not used the tray to eject with Windows 11. It's always been either Explorer or calibre.

I remember a similar problem ejecting the older NOOKs. Using the tray was risky. Windows will display a message that is safe to eject; don't believe it!

I've developed the habit (with Kobos now) to watch the reader screen. When the cover thumbnails images all appear (on "My Books" page, for example), it's probably safe to unplug the reader.

I've never had a problem with data corruption when ejecting from the tray. The device will disappear from the Explorer window, and if the device is still in use, ejecting from the tray will fail, as it should.

Exactly. You do have to unplug before seeing the Home screen -- because it never comes up until you unplug -- but it has caused no problems.

I do wait about five seconds before unplugging, though. I once had a flash drive with an activity light that kept flashing for a couple of seconds AFTER the Windows message that it was safe to unplug.

I have several external drives that do it, i.e. the activity light continues to blink after the Windows message, and not just for a couple of seconds. I just unplug anyway, as any file transfer has usually been finished long ago. No issues so far.

As to my ereaders, those I always eject from Calibre and wait with unplugging until the processing has ended and the home screen has appeared.

I doubt that precaution is necessary. If any files were still open, ejecting would have failed.

Depends on the drive. Some drives might buffer the data and tell the OS it's done, but then keep writing the buffer to media. If you unplug too soon, the data might be in ram (or short term flash) and not written to the final media yet. (And it might need power to complete that.)

If the drive has an activity light and it's still blinking after eject, this is a sure thing.

Also, in linux, unmounting the filesystem and ejecting the drive are separate steps, although both should flush the data. The eject or udisks cli command might only do one of those depending on how you do it, although the gui file manager eject button should do both.

In Windows, it is possible the tray button unmounts the filesystem without flushing the data (although it should finish writing in a few seconds) and the file manager eject button both unmounts the filesystem and ejects the disk.

I know for sure the few times I connect my kobo to a windows system, it doesn't eject the disk when I use the tray button. I don't recall if I've ever tried the file manager eject button -- I will have to try that next time.

So I just connected while having a book open. Promptly got a 'there's an error with this drive' message.... I used Calibre to eject, rebooted the device, and re-connected to update my fanfics.

Then when I ejected, SmartEject told me that there was a missing book on the device. One of my Kobo Store-bought books, one of the first ones I'd purchased actually. Repair Account brought it back, but what a weird thing to happen.
