I personally never liked light sensors. Not in phones, not in tablets and especially not in ereaders. So, for me they're also a gimmick... It's always the first thing I turn off

I'm still on the fence on buying this one or not... I want it, but I don't need it...

If buying a new ereader and the choice is between a Forma and a Sage: no doubt about it, go for the Sage.
It is very responsive and I very much like the look of the front that is one continuous surface of which the screen is just one part and the two buttons another part. None of those ridges that the Forma has. Also, the screen is just perfect with better uniform lighting than the forma and more contrast.
And all this from someone who thought that the Forma was the best ereader he owned thus far.
The most positive early insight I'm gathering from reviews is the observation of improved contrast. There are so few people with the devices in their hands, but it seems to be unanimous among those who have them.

I never know what to make of pictures, but I was quite surprised at the difference of the Libra H2O vs Libra 2 in night mode. Way more than the 15% e-ink is claiming on the new screens.

I figured if there was a meaningful difference, it would have been observed in the Elipsa reviews.

Your comment about the Forma with the battery needing to be charged every day is why I'm hesitant about the 1200mah battery of the Sage, even though it seems I'm in a minority to have that concern. It seems to me the batteries are the first thing to go on these devices, like cell phones.

The only Kobo ereader with a light sensor was the Kobo Aura One. You may consider the one on the Kobo Aura One to be useful, my experience was that like my phone, it tended to change the brightness depending on how I held it and I found that annoying.

Uh-oh. Saw this post on the Kobo reddit:

"Very good device, but the non-uniformity of the back light is still a problem! You clearly see a brighter bar towards the buttons side, actually it's not even a bar, it's two groups of LEDs. You can somehow mask it by playing with the warm light and the intensity of the overall back light, but KOBO, for a 300 EUR device, WTF ?"

If Kobo hasn't improved the light uniformity after the Forma, this device would be a complete failure. Will have to until more reviews come in, but the way this guy is describing it, it seems as though he perceives it to be inherent to the device design and not a random quality control issue.

One random person from Reddit thinking it’s not QA means less than a nothing. Especially when he’s describing something that very much sounds like QA, the LEDs could be misplaced too high.

A lot of legitimate issues have started out with the comments of "one random person" from some site or another. But, true, we should wait for more than one.

I just published what I thought were the dimensions for the SCREEN, but it looks like "Omar D" from Kobo has again given me the measures for the whole DEVICE again. (He gave me these dimensions in a chat and I pointed out then that they were for the whole device: )

If this information below were true, the device would be a 9.5 inch device, not 8.

How to post a picture or create an album of images on here - tip

BTW, I had great difficulty finding out how to post a picture.

To help others out, here are two tips:

1. You can quickly attach one using the 'managed attachment' button, BELOW the writing window.
But if that doesn't appear, hit GO ADVANCED.

2. To upload an image to a permanent album, do this:

Quicklinks (at top right of page)>
User Control Panel >
Pictures & Albums >
Add album >
Upload pictures (or click on the existing pic) >
get the BB code >
Paste into your msg

The instructions I found said nothing about the fact that you have to upload something to a separate section of the site. It got the impression that the 'attachment' section was somewhere in the usual posting window.

I also read in that thread that the mod looking over it has an itchy trigger finger lol.
So it seems possible my attempt to be helpful and save others the 20 minutes I spent might get deleted.
Therefore I will slip it in here to save others.

To help out other poor sods, here is a quick shorthand

If this already exists in a CLEAR FORM (that will survive overzealous moderation), pls let me know and I will delete this message

Quicklinks (at top right of page)>
User Control Panel >

You can just add your picture as an attachment, not as an inline image.

QUESTION to people who've tried out the Sage: might reading PDFs makes it worth it?

Have you found that the extra inch of screen makes it easier to read standard PDFs**?

__________________________________________________ ____
My situation/context of question:

I am unhappy with the Libra's 6.72 GB of space but I already just shelled out on getting a SECOND ONE (to fit all my books), and thereby feel resistant to buying a THIRD device.

However, if that extra inch of screen on the Sage makes a difference in reading standard** PDFs, maybe I can justify it.

_____________________________________________
** I don't mean the large textbook pdfs with all the pictures. I wouldn't expect it to be big enough to read them easily (and an Elipsa is more than I'm willing to pay).
