The Governor General wimped out. She granted proroquation for 7 weeks so that PM Harper could put together his budget and economic stimulus package.

We will be bombarded with TV ads, using the rich coffers of the PC party, extolling the reasons why they should retain power even though they have lost the confidence of the majority of parliament.

The oppositions parties will lauch a much weaker ad response because of their lack of finances.

Harper is Happy and as arrogant as ever. Parti Quebecois is furious over his comments during this debate, right in the middle of a Provincal Election!

If Harper's budget doesn't meet with the approval of the oppositon parties in 7 weeks time there will be another election.

Not the result I was hoping for today.

yeesh, what a mess !! i watched the two speeches you linked to ; harper really will stoop low to discredit the opposition won't he ? it's a shame that the GG didn't stand up to him. Dion made an excellent point that if harper is to present a new budget he should first prove he has the confidence of the parliament. of course, since he pretty clearly doesn't, that would be difficult... so what do you think will happen if there is a new vote ? do you think dion will win ? would harper run again ? what if he is elected again ?? i was a bit shocked he won this time, to be honest...

No party is in a rush to have another election so soon, the opposition was trying to do this through a non-confidence vote and offering up a coalition. The last election cost 300 million C$, the Liberals and NDP are broke.

I believe Harper will be forced to throw in some big economic stimulus initiatives in his budget to appease the opposition, forcing them to vote in favour. If they don't vote in favour of budget, the opposition will be blamed for an election and not Harper's conservative cronies.

If there is another election...who knows...probably another minority Conservative government. Unless, I hope, there is a huge backlash from his handling of this whole affair and he gets left in the dust!

The referees call this a time out. Parents call it that too. Parliament calls it proroguation.
Politics, eh!

PS: The Liberal party is holding it's convention here in Vancouver in late January or early February. Dion has already said that he won't run for leader. Current prospects are Michael Ignatief, Bob Ray and Dominic LaBlanc. No one from Quebec. LaBlanc is l'Acadie.

Also wondering what it would take to get you to share the Nanna's Chocolate Cake recipe here ...... please, please, purty please???

I am NOT writing a briefing for Santa Claus, ´cause I don´t have a clue how to do it this year.

Santa Claus will visit us next Saturday. The whole family will be there including 5 children.

This is how it works (same procedure as every year): All parents have already sent me the texts for their children - sometimes only catchwords - and I´ll put them together to one big "Santa-Briefing" that contains all information he needs to talk to the children.

Now here are some of this year´s catchwords:
"MUST (underlined twice) get rid of soother -> Santa shall take it"
Pardon me???!!! That poor little girl would probably get a Santaphobia if I really let Santa Claus take her soother away!

"No more chocolate for P."
Santa will have some chocolate in his bag to spread around. So how can I let him say "No more chocolate" without him appearing schizophrenic?

"Must get hair cut"
Same problem as above. Santa would never blame boys with long hair since he´s one of them!

"Must not cut guinea pig´s hair"
Another haircut problem. For this we might not need Santa but a psychiatrist.

And so it goes one. You see, a Santa-Briefing is a difficult thing to do. I keep trying

The annual Christmas letter is still on my to-do-list as well. I tinker with the idea of using last year´s letter and see if anyone will notice
