i'm sure that would be ok except of course you will end up with whatever bugs are in the 4.4.9344 version, swings an roundabouts.

If you are on 4.4.9344, then you might not want to stay there especially if you have the light bug and/or a draining battery. It's a choice of the bugs of 4.4.9344 or the bugs of 4.5.9587. For most people, this microSD card bug isn't an issue.

Wish I'd checked here before updating... Had all my reading progress wiped. You think it will take them another few months to fix this bug like it did for them to fix the light one? Having my reading progress be completely wiped out and having to wait through the 10+ minute importing process every time I plug it into my PC to transfer something over is not really tenable, the light bug was a lot easier to work around in comparison. (I didn't use the backlight much anyway, so it was just a matter of disabling the swipe gesture and rebooting my reader whenever I finished reading with the light on in the rare instances I needed it so it would let me turn it back off again.)

Ah well, at least this led to me discovering the very useful Kobo Utilities plugin which helped fix this relatively quickly (what I could remember anyway) along with automatically backing stuff like this up from now on so this will hopefully be less likely to be a problem in the future. For now I'll just stick to 4.4.9344 with wifi off I guess.

I'm also going to go back to previous version, I've a lot of sideloaded kepubs, and every time I connect to add a new book I loose the reading position of the books I'm reading, a complete bother.

Yes and no. It will probably work, but it is not a recommended thing to do.

The recommendation when wanting to downgrade is to do a factory, intercept the upgrade and put the version you want on the device. But, that loses the reading status for all the books and you need to re-add them. Downgrading to a recent firmware version will probably work. There are some versions you probably can't go to, but going from 4.5.9587 to 4.4.9344 should be OK.

What I would do is:

Take the SD card out.
Take a complete backup of the user partition of the device. Just copy all the files on it to somewhere on the PC.
Put the firmware files for the version you want onto the device.
Eject and wait for the install to happen.
Test to see if everything is OK.

That should get you back to the same state you are in for the books, but running the older firmware.

If that doesn't work properly, you can try a factory reset and upgrade to the desired firmware. Then replace all the files on the user partition with the backup you took.

Will you please stop getting it wrong. It's not a sync at kobo.com. It's a sync from your Kobo as your affiliate. This is why you get into arguments here. Your wording needs to change.

How do you intercept the upgrade? I did a factory reset first (thinking that the constant re-importing was due to my database getting corrupted, and my reading progress was already lost so saw no harm in trying) but it just instantly upgraded to the newest version anyway without giving me much choice in the matter, so I just downgraded from there and everything has been fine since.

I've upgraded to this firmware on the KA1, and I'm seeing no problems... but I've had it connected to the computer only once to add some books, and I don't turn off or reboot the device if not necessary.

Still, I wonder where bugs like these come from. I've never had a bug turn up in an already working system in one of the industrial machines I program, except for maybe the omission of an edge case that is so extremely rare that no-one ever thought about it until it happened.

It appears so - I noticed it on my Glo with an external microSD card, but without the card present the problem doesn't manifest itself. It also only seems to happen if there are kepubs on the card. Now unless you side-load kepubs that's a relatively rare situation and one it's unlikely Kobo will check.

The main bug in the new firmware has to do with the microSD card. It won't effect the KA1 at all.
