It's been ages since I've heard anything from Bookeen. Anyone know what they're working on and when we'll hear from them ??

New hardware version and firmware
I have just ordered a Cybook and am interested to see how I well it works, especially with PDFs and my eyes ! Also the reason why my post to this thread is so late (have only just read it).
As far as specs go, if as TS-Rick wrote the CPU is s3c2440 then according to : http://www.samsung.com/global/busine...i=PartnoSearch this family can be either 300, 400, or 533Mhz. And it isn't given that a faster CPU will automatically use more battery. Somebody would have to compare the CPU specs to find out whether that is the case or not, and if it is anything like x86 then just reading a document (without interaction) should't consume any more. As far as "firmware" goes, the 820 may just be a newer Linux kernel to support the processor. And given the months between even the one of the most frequently updated Linux distributions, Ubuntu, every 6 months, it wouldn't surprise me that they don't release a new version that often (although it would be nice that a bug fix release appeared more often than that). Given this is OSS the source code for 820 should be available somewhere which would make it easy to diff the differences between 820 and 796. I'll mail Bookeen as soon as my Cybook has arrived. As for "This makes me doubt that there will be much support for at least the original system" (Manichean), given this is Linux based it should not be a problem (depending upon what other changes other than CPU they have made). |

Back to the 796--How well do you-all think it works now that you've run it for a while? Specifically, how is the battery life? What with one thing and another I'm still version 1.0 build 538--fairly happily, I might add. I am trying to decide whether to upgrade, wait for the next build(which sounds like it may be a verrrry long one) or leave it as-is. The last time, the upgrade bricked my Cybook and it had to be replaced(under warranty)--but it's long out of warranty now and I'm nervous.

I would definitely upgrade to 796. There were all sorts of bugs in 538 which have long since been fixed in later firmware versions.

You loose maybe 3 days battery time with this upgrade (from 7 days to 4 days with it on alla the time). If I had had my old Cybook would still be running 538.

I have honestly not noticed any practical reduction in battery life, but I switch my Gen3 off at the end of a reading session, and the few minutes a day I connect it to my PC is sufficient to keep the battery fully charged.

And as you know if you cannot live with the long boot time before being able to start to read it is really a practical problem since it is very annoying to have to remember to charge the Cybook. It all depends on you usage pattern if it is a practical problem or not.

Very true. It's all down to personal usage style.

One of the few things I wish the CyBook had that the Sony has is the instant-on from sleep.
I would have though it could be done in firmware - store away the info collected on start-up, and if nothing's changed since last start-up, just use the cached info. Quote:
