Do you have the correct character? It should be the 7th character including the "N236". I haven't heard there being a "3" in the 7th character of the serial number. I have only heard of a "1" and a "2". And I only have an image for the first version, the one with a "1" in the serial number. If there is now one with a "3", it either be the same hardware as the second edition, or an updated hardware that will need a separate image.

Hm, If I count the 'N' I end up with a 0. The full s/n is: N236710339820 - the sixth number is a 1 ..

My mistake. I reread the bit for this on the Wiki page, which I wrote, and that only has "2" to mean the version 2 and anything else is the version 1. Checking the original source, it was, "The 7th character is 0 for the original CPU and 2 for the SLL CPU". So, yours is a version 1. I have sent a PM with the link, and I'll update the Wiki page.

a little help for a (new) friend
Hi all,
Thanks so much for this great resource! Somehow my daughter bricked her Aura Edition 2 and she is gutted. Hoping I (we) can get her back on track. Wondering if someone could walk me through this a bit. I've got the SD card out and confirmed this is a v1 (mark 6). I've gone to Geek1011's site and downloaded the latest firmware and unzipped it. Via terminal (I'm on a mac) I can see that the drive is mounted here: /dev/disk2s3 .... /Volumes/KOBOeReader I can also navigate to the .kobo folder. But... I'm not sure what to do next. Much appreciate any pointers on what next!! Happy </insert holiday of choice> ![]() |

Hi!
I'm new to this forum and just found this thread because I have bricked my Kobo Aura 2. I don't know which version it is (1 or 2) because I'm not sure where I should be looking for the serial number. On the outside of the device the only number I found which might be a serial number is: IFETEL: RCPKON216-1076. (is this the serial number? if so, I am guessing version 2? the 7th character is a 2 (after the N?)) Anyway, my device is probably toast, because now that I opened it up, and pulled the battery, the screen has lines all over it, but just in case it is salvageable, I'd like to put a new image on the SD card. The card itself is not readable when I remove it and put it in a Windows 10 machine. It says it needs to be formatted first. What should I format it as? I found firmware files on GEEK1011's site. Do I just format the SD card, create a .kobo file, and copy those unzipped files to the .kobo folder? Thanks - if there is an FAQ that answers all these questions (I recognize I am a noob at this!) feel free to just shoot me a PM with a link to the FAQ, because I can't seem to find this basic information anywhere :$ |

You can't download the kobo UPDATE files and use those to recover the device; you require an image of the SD card that you write to your SD card. Davidfor is the wizrd of supplying the image files.

The SD card can not be formatted in a Windows machine. There are multiple partitions, only one of which is a Windows compatible partition unless you have installed an extFS driver for Windows. You can download Minitools Partition Wizard Free edition and look at the partitions. The partition image file will recreate the partitions when you write it to the SD card. |

@Icarus3000: I have sent you a PM with the link to the image. Hopefully it is the correct image for you. As @DNSB said, it sounds like you have cracked the screen. But, it could be that something wrote rubbish to the screen, so it is worth trying.

I needed a SD Card (for upgrade my camera) and the only one available I get in this lockdown period was the one inside my Kobo. Stupidly, I've just copy/paste all files in the SD card as backup instead of creating an image. Then formatted it and now, the copy/paste in the other way, is not working. My kobo even doesn't turn on (no light). My Win10 doesn't show me it in the explorer. I "hear" the connection, but it doesn't appear anymore. The factory reset isn't possible. The only way, I hope is to get an image. Could you share with me ? Many thanks in advance. Fred |
