I meant reinstall factor initial fw. Let's take a break! At least it's not bricked and I can keep using no matter version it is. Thank you again for helping and answering fast! |

My PW-3 is still running 5.6.1.1 -
I don't have any trouble with it, at least for what uses I put to it. PS: firmware 5.6.5 does not support the ;installHtml search bar command. **ONLY** the factory initial update image does that trick. So: Factory initial: ;installHtml method Consumer 5.6.5: use BD's software jailbreak, current directions in top post. |

First-time poster and new Kindle Voyage 3G owner reporting a successful jailbreak on the first attempt. My device was running 5.7.4. Did the downgrade, installed the jailbreak, upgraded back to 5.7.4 before copying my backed up /documents folder. Allowed the device to automatically download and install 5.8.1 afterward, jailbreak persists.

Which means it isn't in KindleTool - Which means the hotfix can't be built for that device. I will report this to the hotfix/KindleTool maintainer (same person). Last edited by knc1; 07-07-2016 at 02:38 AM. |

So, I decided to play around some more, and successfully ended up jailbreaking a PW3 wifi 2015, which previously got bricked (along with a few other people in this thread with the same PW3 wifi, so there's some snag somewhere).
Here's what I did: 1.) Attempted methods in OP, got to step 4. I originally had 5.8.1.1 (the latest PW3 firmware) 2.) Upon attempting to update with the factory initial firmware, it just looped a lot and then came up with the repair screen. Bricked! 3.) Connected via USB while looping/failing install, and my windows 10 machine did let me access the root directory as Kindle, with just a documents folder and nothing else. 4.) in that root directory, made DO_FACTORY_RESTORE blank file (common unbricking method) 5.) eject 6.) hold down power for 10-15 seconds until the light on the bottom changes to the orange/restart or whatever (I'm not actually sure if this step was necessary, since it was looping in some sort of reboot after the repair needed screen -> power button anyways, so it inevitably gets to the DO_FACTORY_RESTORE command) 7.) that returned me to the setup screen, and device info confirmed 5.6.1.1, HOWEVER, that's not the initial firmware, that's consumer release, and I verified this by attempting the next step of installing the JB file in root and trying the ;installHtml in search, only to have it do absolutely nothing. 8.) Okay... my next thought was let's put that initial 5.6.1.1 from the pastebin back on the root directory. Do that, and the update button in settings is active, hit update 9.) kindle restarts, updates, back into setup, and NOW I have initial 5.6.1.1, NOT consumer, and verified this by successfully installing the jb with the ;installHtml in the search bar, which did blink and then restart the kindle 10.) Finish with the last hotfix step Done. All restarted, no problems, and finally jailbroken. Last edited by Sepelion; 07-07-2016 at 04:35 AM. |

Good news. Thanks for the deails. We need that. The question is, where did that 5.6.1.1 CONSUMER release come from? It could have been factory that ran a script to delete all the factory stuff, perhaps... Strange that it only happens occasionally.

Yes, I also considered it's possible that the DO_FACTORY_RESTORE got rid of some additional things that the simple latest firmware -> reset device (through the menu) didn't do well enough to go straight to the initial firmware -> update.

Sorry, I just meant to imply that the method I posted above may present a more total cleanup (specifically related to the DO_FACTORY_RESTORE step), which removes whatever snag is there that is letting others go straight from whatever latest firmware on their kindle's straight to initial factory firmware, and not bricking like me and the few other PW3 wifi 2015 guys did.
