I think it would. It's a pretty good book. I read it for a local book club. The animated movie is also quite good. The movie has one of my wife's favorite songs which is Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel.

What is our status on this? Are we going to keep the current categories for 2016 or look at updating them? We are over half way through the year now but we still have time to change things if we want to.

Here are some pertinent posts I found while refreshing my memory:

As for being ready for "vitriolic abuse", I've had a lifetime of preparation, if that's the way the vote goes.

A most excellent suggestion. Would you mind starting it?

So instead of Mystery/Thriller we get Western.

I believe we had left it in the hands of WTSharpe to be our intrepid leader for whatever the categories, nominating options, and voting mayhem there will be. I look forward to being offended.

I'm re-reading this thread now and making notes. When action comes, it will have to be quick and decisive because my schedule is in flux this year.

Why not a quick and dirty poll, with the top eleven choices the winners? It seems the least contentious way to decide, to me. I also think that running it would require the last effort from Tom and also lend itself to handing over the duty in any given month if he needed the break.

My suggestion (as I've said earlier in the thread) would be to make it not allow unlimited choices, as that could skew the results in favor of certain slates. But that's an issue of going for the most popular choices overall, which might encourage more participation (I have my doubts) or going for more of a something for everyone type slate.

Ah, yes. I thought the options were a choice between making fewer people happier more of the time or more people happy less of the time. I totally overlooked making one person happy all the time!

A lot of people liked my list. The problem is that we are not going to please everyone. So we have to go for a fair and balanced list. A list that mixes categories together that don't fit such as science fiction & fantasy is going to be a mess. So we need a list that has proper categories that please most people and it not the same as the one we have now. I think my list is a fairly balanced list.

There is a design theory that the best way to make a usable product or piece of software is to design for one person.

I am hoping for no vote at all and WT Sharpe just sending us on a journey following whatever whim he has. I'd be in for that for 2016.

Honestly, I'd drop out if that turned out to be the choice. If that's what people want, of course I'm happy with it and hope it's hugely successful, but I'm not a one for despots, even benevolent ones. I think of a reading group as a collaborative enterprise and not a command performance.

*Shrugs* I'm not trying to add to the rancor. This is why I wanted a quick and dirty poll and have done with it and I suspect our motivation is similar.

I'm with you on this. I'm trying to be a part of this book club, and one of the things I like is that it's user motivated and decided. That means some months I'm not happy with the choice. OK, such is life.

The nomination process is valuable and I'd hate to lose it. Even when I don't love the choice, I always discover a book or two among the nominees that looks good to me. Even given it's Sci-Fi month, I've already checked The Girl, the Gold Watch & Everything out of OverDrive.

I think I am misinterpreting your last statement issybird but I want to make sure since that will help me to see where I want to vote if it comes down to that.

I don't think I have seen a suggestion where the book selections are mandated. At most it was that the categories would be selected with the nomination process each month continuing as-is.

If there is a poll that had the options below in it (from the quotes I posted a couple days ago) and item 5 was selected would that be enough for you to drop out? Or is that enough "community input" for you to be satisfied? What about item 6?
  1. Vote on individual lists
  2. Vote on 30 categories, keep top 11 + Second Chance
  3. Vote on 30 categories, keep top 6 and then get lists of 5 to fill in the rest + Second Chance
  4. Vote on 6 structured categories (including Second Chance) and have 6 free-for-all months
  5. Allow WT Sharpe to choose the categories
  6. Vote for favorite categories but let WT Sharpe choose the final list with the vote as input
I like item 6, as opposed to option 2, because WTSharpe would have some discretion to omit overlapping categories, for example if sci-fi, fantasy, urban fantasy, space opera, and sci-fi/fantasy were all selected, and we would still have a voice in the process. I am concerned about choosing a completely voted on selection from the list of categories because there is the potential for a very lopsided list. I think he should have some discretion to omit some results if that occurs.

Options 3 and 4 could also be modified to allow some discretion in the actual categories selected and would work fine if that happens.
