Windows 8 will run virtual machines, so you can load up almost any operating system you want.

Ripley's Believe It Or Not, there are other uses for computers and software than the internet. 60-80% of my use is on my "sterile" machine, not the one with an internet connection...
Why would they bother? For the few people that still run 16 bit programs there is Dosbox

I wonder why a thread about a free windows upgrade becomes about linux vs windows. (by the way, it sounds as if your 16bit programs doesn't run under linux too and you use there a vm. So what...)

Hehe, but just imagine if microsoft does manage to offer one os for any device with cross buying apps etc. That would be appealing for many. Of course this remains to be seen.

Android is a better bet for that. More appealing on Mobile, and Chromebooks appeal to simplicity -- also important in this regard.

Oh, as an after thought this could be one of the reasons to give it for free. The hope that people will then buy a windows smartphone or tablet and finally getting some real marcet share in the mobile world. The question is, if they can/want to make mobile devices for normal users not just business users.

Ah, I see.

Do business uses use the Metro apps on it, or just desktop software?

I believe one of the main attractions of the Surface has been that it is basically just a really compact laptop (with the keyboard case).

As I said, it remains to be seen how good win 10 will do all this things. Depending how diccifult it is to create universal apps and how many will be there, you could use each windows device similar to a pc. The question is, if mobile devices are realy capable to handle them fast enough. Of course you could do most things with apps on idevices and androids, but having only one os to learn, buying only one app for each task etc. could be attractiv.

A few of our clients do as well. Office and Outlook integration is apparently excellent. I suspect an alterior motive is that it makes the phone that much less appealing for personal use....
