"Delighted to hear that you were finally able to resolve the matter, John.
__________________ Harry" Thank you Harry. My only problem now is deciding which device to go with next. I am leaning heavily towards another Cybook, although i am still a bit wary about the broken screen issue. I suppose that if the Cybook is protected with a case, it will be a lot less vulnerable. I have the impression that you have a lot more knowledge than most on these matters; in your opinion, is the Cybook any more vulnerable to screen breaks than any of the other readers? This is the only issue that causes me to hold back on purchasing another Cybook, as it has all the features I need - no more, no less. Thanks in advance, John |

Hi John,
I think that the CyBook without a case is EXTREMELY vulnerable to screen breakage - it's very thin, and easy to "twist" which is a sure-fire recipe for a broken screen. The case gives good protection, though. Provided it's kept in the case, I don't think it's any more vulnerable than any other reader. I carry mine around all day in a briefcase with lots of heavy books, and so on, and it's not come to any harm. |

Yes, I agree. I wouldn't want to carry it around in a back-pack. Best to put it in some sort of rigid box if you're going to do that.

How annoying for you
![]() Do you ever use the machine out of its case, carry it around in a backback, or anything like that? Your picture looks to me like a controller failure rather than a screen break, but I've been wrong before and doubtless I will be in the future. |

However, yes, getting some sort of hard case will *help* to protect the Cybook. Still, be forewarned that at least two Cybooks/EB-100s (made by Netronix, which makes the Cybook hardware) have failed (cracked screen, broken controller connection) whilst being held, gently, in the users' hands. ![]() But the ruler-straight horizontal lines looked controller-related to me too, glad I'm not alone ![]() The last day of life went roughly like this: - wake up, carry downstairs (actually the wif did that, I'm on crutches again) and set it on the table. it got moved to a different room and read off and on for a couple hours - it got left alone a few hours indoors while we were gone (in it's case on a table, pet-free etc) - then carried it outside and set on the back seat of the jeeeeep for an hour (dinner) roughly 85 degrees, evening (no sun, no superheating, etc) - carried inside, it sat on a table for an hour - I turned on just before bed (boot time is annoying, so I generally turn it on before going upstairs) -- boom. looked like the pic. Psuedo-related note - anyone use the eCaddy with the new leather case? |

Damn. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it's a painless warranty replacement. It really should be for something like that!

Hi all,
I also have a tale to tell - my cybook was left on a bedside table for 5 MINUTES, not even turned off, nobody else in the house, while I went one floor down to get something to drink. When I returned and opened a cover to resume reading, there were those darned stripes in the middle of the screen, and a blank area in the left lower corner. Now, unless it tried to commit a suicide by jumping off the table (and then returned mysteriously to it), I see no way it could have been damaged. And yet it was. I wrote to booken, but as it happened yesterday, no reply as of yet. If I have to pay $120.00 to repair that kind of defect, I will be truly upset. Cybook was purchased in December, WITH a case, which it rarely left (only when it hang up & I had to either hit the reset button or take the battery out). No falls, no hits, as I lead fairly uneventful life, am neither backpacking nor diving. Was carried in my bag (in it's case, of course), and if that constitutes hard use, and could have caused screen damage, then it's not fit to be sold to general public, 'cause who wants a book that they can't carry to read on a bus or during a lunch break? I really loved the device, but maybe I will wait for Mentor (I think it is that) to come out, instead of sending good $$ after bad. I have had my trusty Dell Axim working as an ebook (and mp3/video player, and GPS) for years, and it certainly has seen way more action - bumps and hits and falls off the dashboard, and it is still working!!! Its 6 years old now, and working!!! For the $$ I paid for cybook, I would expect at least 6 trouble free years. With the care I taken of it, maybe even 10. I am really upset over this, so I am venting. Sorry for this. I will let you know if I got anywhere with booken (which I seriously doubt). Last edited by dki; 09-03-2008 at 01:56 PM. |

Another brooken screen here
I think its just too easy to broke... and way too expensive... Ive been ultra-caring about my cybook... i read in the manual (I think) that the screen was very sensitive, so I didnt even cleaned the dust directly, just blowing the screen. I bought a pretty rigid case. The case was not made of steel but just a liltle pressure and all broken (really small preasure and it was in its case) It was very expensive (350€ plus shipment... other similar readers cost the same amount or less in $), the software is still crap. I knew what i was buying but I think i wont repair it... too much crap to put up with... ill probably buy a kindle... I dont like the drm thing but i do like that they assume the fault when is so easy to broke. Im not pissed as I sound really. I wanted this toy so badly and I bought it... but I wont keep encouraging this product and its company by reparing it... Ill just stop using it until is ready or until I buy a kindle ![]() |

Bookeen needs to acknowledge this as a problem since too many people have been having broken screens without doing anything untoward to the Gen3.

What do you mean by "just a little pressure", alberto? What did you do to it? Carry it in a backpack with other heavy objects? I'm afraid that no reader - not a Kindle, not a Sony, not an iLiad - is going to "survive" having heavy object press into it.
In what way do you believe that "the software is crap", by the way? What problems have you found with it? |
