Same here.

If you never highlight or annotate, Kindles might indeed fulfill your needs. They're just unusable for me. I was willing to put up with the limitations when the original first e-ink Kindle was released -- not in 2013.

Even on iOS? But, you know, fonts are only a small part of what's missing in the Kindle app for me. Being unable to save dozens of themes (like you can do in Moon+ Reader Pro) would be another unpardonable deficiency from my point of view. I dislike each of the 3 Kindle themes offered by default (can't stand solid-colour backgrounds, no matter of what colour; gotta have textures!).

Naturally! People have varying tastes. That's the hallmark of good-quality software: it allows users to adapt the software to their personal preferences. Kindle is (in my opinion) bad software because it lacks customisability, even on some of the most elementary levels.

Nope, from my perspective, Kindle software is hopelessly behind Moon+ Reader Pro on Android, and behind Marvin on iOS. It is clear as day that Amazon is satisfied with providing such bare-bones software. That may be fine for them and many of their customers -- but not for me.
I mean Moon+ Reader, the themes and fonts. I wasn't talking about the Kindle App and for custom fonts I was talking on an Actual Kindle like the K3, K4 and PW1. You can use whatever fonts you want and on the PW1 you can use several different fonts. I have like 8 installed on mine. My PW1 is my most precious possession It doesn't leave this house as I can't stand the PW2. The PW1 also has the ability to use multi dictionaries the PW2 does not.

Ah, right. There's already a dedicated Moon+ Reader thread in this forum section (or a handful of them), so no need to launch a new one, perhaps. I don't feel the need to say anything more on this subject, except that I hope the nasty italics bug introduced by the KitKat upgrade will be squashed in Moon+ soon.

Yeah, e-ink Kindles are a lot better than these Kindle apps on "LCD/IPS platforms". Still, not good enough for me. After Marvin for iOS was released a year ago, I gave away my last pair of e-ink Kindles, because Marvin's annotation capabilities are incomparable to Kindle software; it would have been highly inefficient for me to stick to the Kindle platform any longer.

Yeah... and Marvin allows you to use 4 different custom dictionaries at the same time. (Just by way of illustrating.)

Still: No KitKat for me yet...
My personal theory: Since I bought it, I've used it maybe for 2 hours in total. Maybe usage duration or on-time or something like that puts you in front of the line?
Anyway: About twice per week I keep checking for an OTA update.

Me either. And I use it pretty much all day, every day.

Hearing about the loss of Flash support though, maybe not a bad thing.

Another KitKat issue is the Kit-Kat update's disabling of SMS messaging on the Nexus 7.

Discussion here.

Yeah, decided to hold off on the Kit Kat update because of this.

Verizon issued the following statement:
Quote:
During the certification process for the Nexus 7, Google, Asus and Verizon uncovered a systems issue that required Google and Asus to undertake additional work with the Jelly Bean OS running on the device. Since Google was about to launch its new Kit Kat OS, rather than undertake this work, Google and Asus asked Verizon to suspend its certification process until Google's new OS was available on the Nexus 7.
I wonder if this is somehow related. I can't really think of a "systems issue" that might be causing Verizon problems given the Nexus 7 works perfectly fine on AT&T and T-Mobile.

I've never been able to use SMS on either the 2012 or 2013 Nexus 7. Not from lack of trying though. I finally realized that it was because I have a tablet add on plan so it is data only.

Currently using my Nexus 7 with T-Mobile's 200MB free and while that plan is data only, they do send you SMS alerts regarding plan usage, etc, so I know SMS works. I'm going on vacation overseas where carriers don't care what device have or what you do on it as long as you pay them that's why I'm keeping mine on JB. In fact, I need to have SMS on the Nexus before I can enable the data plans. Otherwise, I'd have to put the SIM card inside a phone, send the SMS short code to enable the data plan and then put the SIM back on the Nexus 7.

I'm just receiving the update.
I've charged it for the first time in maybe 10 days.
Maybe connecting it to the charger makes for the difference?
Anyway...downloading now...

Still nothing here. Been connected to the charger constantly. Going to take it with me for Thanksgiving travel. With any luck it'll update at my MIL's on her blazing fast FIOS connection.
