Good grief. That thing looks like it was designed for babies, or to be used by astronauts in space. I can only hope those are not publicity shots. The text is blue. Screen looks completely washed out.

It's sad because I really want a real alternative to the Kindle. We need a healthy competitive market.

When it comes down to it, people will make their decision of what to buy based on what is important to them.

I get that most e-readers are moving to touch screen only, but Nook stood out because of the page buttons. That was something that made a group of people happy. So removing them makes the Nook less desirable to a sub set of folks. I don't see why that is upsetting to people. I held off on upgrading my Kindle because I was worried about finger prints, lack of buttons, and a touch screen only device. I got an iPad and got over that fear. Now I have a PW2 and love it. But it took me a bit of time and adjustment.

So there are folks that prefer buttons, good for them. I understand why they are upset that the Nook no longer has the buttons. Can we let them rant without makign comments like "Who cares, everyone is going to touch screen?" We all know that, I knew that when I didn't buy a Kindle Touch or the PW1, but it didn't change the fact that it annoyed me.

BN seems to have gone out of its way to remove features that made them stand out and that people enjoyed. They made themselves look more like a Kindle or Kobo and alienated customers who didn't want a Kindle or Kobo because they liked certain features on the Nook.

I doubt that those folks are a majority of Nook owners but I get their pain.
Yes,I get their pain as well.. but it's kinda like going from rotary dial phone to push botton phone.. they probably didn't like that either.. but it's the way to go.. fast, easy and simple. Tigers don't change their stripes. but all in all, finger prints etc.. that is not a issue on a e-Ink screen.. turn the page? hit the screen left or right.. so simple.. I don't get it.. LOL..touch screens are the up to date way to go.. PERIOD.. exception is on/off switch.. LOL

You might've had a lucky escape. The Nook salesman at my local B&N was an interesting mix of cluelessness and misinformation, and it really did seem that his primary job was to sell Nooks. I used to be in there quite often browsing the pbooks and I never saw him anywhere else in the store.

If you read up on the device here and then play with it in person, you probably don't need anyone to sell it to you. I bought the Nook ST (my first ereader) that day despite the salesman, not because of him.

I later bought the Nook Glow. After seeing this ugly new white Nook with its lack of an SD card, I can only hope that Kobo cleans up their QC and customer service before I'm ready for a new frontlit reader.

I have not read the whole thread.

I've seen alot of posts the deride other's opinions about buttons, or memory slot.

My big questions is, since this no longer has an memory slot, why will I buy this over a PaperWhite 2?

No reason that I can tell. The ebooks that I have been interested in have been cheaper for the Kindle then the Nook.

If I can't carry my complete library on my device (I know, some of you don't want to do this, that doesn't mean that it is not something I want to do) and have to "manage" the ebooks on my device, why won't I do it on a device that the books are cheaper on?

I would. I don't know if I will, but I want my reader to read epub out of the box. Yes, I can strip DRM and convert but I don't want to be forced to do that, (I borrow tons of library books that aren't available for Kindles, ) But that's me. Nothing of this may be of any concern to you, and if so there is probably no reason for you.
I am very happy with my current Book Simple Touch though so it's no rush. Even though I would like a good lighted reader. Book Glow, old version, doesn't do much for me so I will check this one out at some point.

Well, it's absolutely a matter of opinion, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that love to read on the Noom Touch/Glow and really love the form factor.
I looks odd, I agree, but I love the way it feels to hold. And I'm glas they kept that bezel. It IS about the width of my thumb and the rounded corners opens more options to hold it comfortably. I'm of course talking about the "old" Touch now, but it looks like the new one is similar.
I hope it's a bit like me: Prettier in life than on pictures!

No it's not a travesty but as has been pointed out a number of times already, the things that made the Nook appealing or stand out from the others in the market have been lost.
Well, it just seems to me ..that this isn't the first company to remove their page turn buttons or their sd slot and still go on to survive. And I don't recall Nook being a market leader when it had those features. If it was that important (and I admit I would have preferred they keep both) more people would have voted with their pocket books.

I have the original glow light and the new glow light. The new glow light is a definite improvement with or without the buttons. And, the option to buy the old model with buttons and sd slot and at an all time low price is still available. I'm sure you can find used Kindles, Sonys and Kobos with similar features on e-bay.

Barnes and Noble did not eliminate the page turn button feature, the e-reading public did. If there was enough demand for it not only would Barnes and Noble would have them, Kindle and Kobo would have them and Sony would be selling their product in the U.S. Like its been said before, "I don't know who the last buggy whip manufacturing company was. But, one thing I can say for sure is they made the best buggy whip."

Very well said. I still feel with the low price point on a new device it should sell decent. The screen from what i saw was very nice and i guess i am one of the few who loves the white.

Two problems. The light looks to be on high and the photo is overcompressed so it's losing details. It's a lousy photo. It's not a photo you can use to judge how the screen will look in person.

I was gonna say the same thing. I saw it in person and its well evenly lit and clear as a bell. I zoomed in on that pic and its clearly low res. Until people actually see it.in person their judgement is only based on what they hear or see in a photo.

The fonts are smoother which is important to me. However they are thinner, and the STR without Glowlight definitely has a bolder look. The STR with Glowlight has grayer text and so the difference is not as apparent. Kindle and Sony newer and older models have similar comparisons in this regards, and I know some people prefer the older, bolder look. Hope that helps!
Asawi, here are some photos to go with my previous comments. The old Nook in the photos is the Simple Touch with no Glowlight. I took them at two different font sizes, one smaller and one larger, since I don't know what you prefer. I have the same book on the screen viewed with the same font, line spacing and margins. I had an interesting observation when comparing them side by side. You can see that the new Glowlight has more space between lines and also more space at top and bottom. Therefore, the paragraph at the bottom of the page on the old Nook starts at the top of the page on the new Nook.

Here are some photos to go with my previous comments. The light was set at mid-range, and there was some ambient light. I wasn't in a completely dark room with Glowlight at maximum. I was attempting to simulate my typical reading conditions.

One photo compares the Paperwhite 2 on the left with the new Glowlight on the right. You can see it has less shadow at the bottom edge compared to the Nook at the top edge. Also the Nook has more light bleed along the screen edge.

The other photo compares the old Nook on the left with the new Nook on the right.

My conclusion is that the new Nook is definitely improved but still not as good as the new Kindle. The text is not washed out to me as somebody commented from other photos. It's pretty similar to the Kindle. However, I think the Kindle does a better job at minimizing ghosting, and you can set refresh to every page (the Nook does not have any optional settings).
