The Nook HD+ has a 1.5 ratio. As far as I know no other tablet has that ratio.

I don't; I'm referring to hardware features. I've yet to encounter an Android app that didn't scale properly for either my Nexus 4 or Nexus 7.2; and I use the same apps for both devices.

Upscaling to a 7-inch tablet, or faking a tablet app there, is not as difficult as making a true tablet app for a 10-inch tablet. It's 10-inch tablets especially where iOS crushes Android.

Mind-boggling, that one.
![]() ![]() I love it how everyone looks with condescencion at the so-called "education sector", as if outdated, overpriced tablets were exactly what financially struggling schools were clamoring for. ![]() |

There is also the speculation that there are some systems (e.g. Point of Sale systems built for iPad) that require a 30-pin connector and iPad 2/3/4-style enclosures. I think it's plausible.

Right... all I'm saying is I can't imagine a rational reason.

Not sure if you'd consider this to be a rational reason...but we bought an iPad 2 for my Mother In Law last Christmas. Both my husband and I have iPads--I have an iPad 2 and he has the original first gen iPad. We wanted to get something for her that would work with the accessories we have and that both of us would be familiar with--since we'd be helping her set it up and use it. (She is technology challenged to put it mildly.) It didn't make sense to pay more for a more up to date iPad for her. She uses it to play some games on, check her e-mail and do some light web surfing.

Thank you, dordale. Well, at least that is last Christmas, when iPad 2 was only 1.5 years old. I wonder if many people will consider the same device a full year later for this year's Christmas, for the unchanged price.
![]() If I met someone considering to buy an iPad as a Christmas present this year, I would advise them to definitely add the $100 and buy iPad Air instead. Particularly if it was a gift for someone who is not a teenager; to me, it's not a question of advanced technology per se, but the incomparably crisper Retina screen is something that users on all levels of expertise will appreciate. It's a boon for their eyesight. Today you also get much reduced size and weight in iPad Air -- and to throw all of that away just to save $100 would seem ill-advised. (Alternatively, the latest iPad mini costs exactly the same, $399; but the larger screen may be more appreciated especially by users whose eyesight may not be optimal.) The irony here is that Apple poses itself as a "luxury brand", yet it is going to sell a 10-inch tablet into 2014 for an extremely high price of $400, sporting a screen resolution (1024 * 768 pixels) that even the cheapest Chinese knock-off manufacturer would blush to be offering nowadays, especially at such a seemingly insane price point. ![]() |
