Probably a newbie-like question:
Is there any (technical) advantage in hooking up an external monitor to the docking station instead of directly to the Surface Pro?

I could be misinformed, but the port on the SP2 is a 1.1 and on the DS it is 1.2 allowing you to daisy chain monitors, ergo two external monitors can be connected.
As far as resolution, color saturation and other technical specs I can't say there is a difference. The main advantage as I see it is additional USB ports, Ethernet and ease of swapping in and out.

I don't find it to be "bad" at all. I use the Surface Pro as a highly portable laptop, and the battery life is at least as good as any other laptop I've ever owned. I've no idea what "minecraft" is, I'm afraid, but if it's a Windows program then certainly it should run; the Surface Pro is a standard Windows computer.

You would have to research that and see. Go to the minecraft web site and look at the required specs. Minecraft would not run on our older XP desk tops. It would run on one of our XP laptops. Runs very well on our Win7 desk tops. But that doesn't mean the surface tablet will meet the graphics and processor requirements.

Minecraft is in Java . And you should check it out, it's awesome.

My kids love it. Three of them are playing it on the xbox now. I had to buy another account so they could run it on 2 computers at once.

They don't, however, like the android version, though they assured me they did, at first.

My whole family likes playing the Android version (MCPE) together. It'll be interesting if all the versions unify and become interoperable.
I sometimes imagine that Minecraft will evolve into the OASIS described in Ernest Cline's "Ready Player One."
