And I understand this code does nothing. I just want code to turn off footer on Aura HD... I tried DNSB's but I must have [many] syntax errors because tgz does not compile.

Is there any working code I can paste into the conf?... I wish working code was in the conf, deleting a dozen justified # is easier than the /n/ process.
If you are looking at the stuff I've posted here, the lines have been unpacked by changing the \n pairs to new lines and the \t pairs to tabs. It makes it much easier for humans to read but is not suitable for being fed back into the patch generator.

The kpg.cfg file I'm using at this time without the human touch is:
Code:
# Kobo Patch Generator config file
# firmware ver. 2.8.1
# (c) 2013 MZ
#

<Patch>
patch_name = `Custom reading footer style`

I've modified the line spacing and font size values as well as the header/font size and disabled the Cyrillic keyboard and margin fine tuning.

Removing the # in front of the first "replace_zlib = 1205FF4," and placing it in front of the second "replace_zlib = 1205FF4," will disable the header (actually, shrink it to 5 pixels and make it transparent).

I've tested that here and it does work so not sure why it is not working on your end. Please remember to replace the libnickel.so.1.0.0 with a new unmodified copy each time.

Regards,
David

Well, thanks very much for help, David, but no difference.

I did a factory result, redownloaded and extracted fresh v7, copied your code, moved # to second "replace_zlib" to turn footer off, sent compiled tgz over... Damn! footer still persists on both an epub and pdf... It seems to have gotten slightly larger as well.

I know the patcher is working however because the light control has increments of 1.

Are you sure this isn't just a widows & orphans problem with this particular epub? If you turn through lots of pages is the footer size varying a lot? Have you taken any steps to set widows/orphans to zero in your epubs?

I don't think so, I've tried 6 epubs from a variety of sources -all have the footer.

Footer appeared larger after first reset, but now seems normal again... Might have been imagining things.

First which Kobo do you have? Second have you tried turning it completely off and on again after applying the patch?

... and if you haven't taken any steps to set widows/orphans to zero then all of them will use the Kobo default of 2 or 3 (no-one seems exactly sure which). See here if you're not sure what widows/orphans are.

If you display the cover page of a epub which is using an svg wrapper, how far from the page number is the bottom of the image? Text pages can vary depending on how the lines, paragraph gaps and whatever else fit the page. A full page image (in my opinion) gives the best indication of just how big the footer is.

David

I don't think this applies anymore with the V7 patch. I haven't needed to add any css for widows/orphans. One thing that did get me in the early days was page margins, and @page. With those cleared, I can run up to the edge.

You still need the widows and orphans set to 0. Without them, you get closer to the bottom of the screen but will still end up with blank lines.

Well, I haven't bothered with those widows and orphans and I haven't had any instances of blank lines at the bottom after applying the patch - except for twice so far (in quite a lot of reading), when I had that strange bug at the end of a chapter, where the very last line of the chapter takes up its own page.

When I was playing with widows and orphans a while back, I generated an ebook with 300 paragraphs that took an average of 5 lines with my usual font size choice. Without the widows and orphans settings, I got extra space about every 3 pages with the V7 patch installed.

So it seems I got lucky.

Anyway, one or two blank lines at the bottom wouldn't really bother me. What did bother me about that bug were those half-empty pages, and they are defintely gone with the patch, regardless of what you do regarding the bereaved.

I've noticed a couple of unexpected page breaks but not nearly as often. 1 or 2 a week rather than 4 or 5 per day.

"bereaved" -- cute!

I haven't wanted to try the patch again because I'm going to have to use my Aura HD for a reading tonight and I don't want to introduce more variables into the performance. I'm already a tad nervous about the hang that sometimes occurs with page turns.

Anyway, enough procrastination about last revisions. Back to editing the pieces I have to read.
