Hats off to BoB for doing so. I never bought anything from them, but I do buy from Kobo and Google, and I remember how stunned I was when I first "understood" what DRM in ebooks means - when I bought second Kindle on my account wanting to give it to my husband.
Who knows how many people out there have bought BoB books and have no idea about DRM and what will happen with the books they paid for. I seriously sympathise with them, especially with compulsive buyers like myself who wanted to replace their paper libraries.

Maybe, but it puts Calibre in a bad light as far as DRM removal goes. Even though the creator has spent so much distancing himself for that particular thing. I don't think that's cool.

I am sure Calibre creator will contact them to ask them to rephrase that part.

BoB gives wrong information, and I think they know that.

If one installs it, it cannot remove DRM; not by default. One needs to research that for oneself. Therefore, Calibre is safe.

Consider the LAME mp3-encoder. It is prohibited to give away a program that can create mp3's, without paying royalties. However, giving away programming code is allowed... So, LAME is just a piece of code, for 'educational purposes', and it 'happens' to be able to create mp3's when compiled.

Same with Calibre. It doesn't have anything to do with DRM; technically, BoB is wrong there. It just 'happens to be' that a plugin written for Calibre consisting of 'educational code' can also de-DRM books.

People might just find that plugin when looking how to remove DRM using Calibre.

While I agree with that, the problem is that it could be construed as a program for removing DRM by people who do not know, or are unclear, and that can lead to confusion by people who have the legal means to make trouble.

Just for an example, BitTorrent programs, the program itself is not illegal at all, but can be used for illegal means. I formerly worked for two rather large companies that used BitTorrent programs to distribute software and firmware updates for the machines I used to work on. For most people though, the mention of the program causes them confusion because they don't know what it is, or they think it's simply a program used to pirate software. Most people aren't even aware of it's usefullness. In bringing it up with co-workers I have now, they never even thought it could be used for legitimate purposes.

I first learned of torrents through Project Gutenberg--you can download a few thousand books at once that way. Internet Archive also makes its public domain downloads available via torrents.

Everything can always be misused. Usenet was originally intended for text-only messages. Later it got the capability to attach (small) binary files. Nowadays, only very few people (compared to 15 years ago or so) use Usenet for communication. If you mention Usenet nowadays, most people who know about it immediately think: "Oh, yeah, that's a nice way to get loads of illegal stuff."

Same with IRC... and many other channels that were originally conceived to share or store legitimate information.

As stated above, the ones who are leaving the scene are the smaller ones that offered the better discounts.
Just how did you expect the little guys to be able to compete on price against Amazon selling books at a loss?

Better than they did than with the advent of agency pricing.

BoB succeeded (before agency pricing) by discounting different books than Amazon did; and also by offering other formats.

Amazon was never selling every eBook at a loss, they were offering some as loss leaders and making it up by selling the rest at full price. BoB offered rewards dollars on almost every title which provided effective discounts that made them competitive without costing them as much as lower prices would.

Agency was what killed them, not Amazon.

Stripping DRM can be done totally without Calibre. So singling the program out seems uncool to me.

But then I heart Calibre even though I only use a limited number of its wonderful capabilities.
