Interesting. Maybe there is some economical reason for it (supply agreements, write downs, some other voodoo the bean counters have worked out), or perhaps they feel it will prime the market for a WebOS sale. There is also the OTA update that they are rolling out soon, and then the applications that they were giving away till the end of the month. Really wish I could have picked one up. I'd be curious if any of that new stock makes it to other markets than the US.

I'm wondering if this could signal a revival for the TouchPad.

I know I said that the device wouldn't have succeeded prior to the price drop (which I maintain) but since it went to $99, it's been selling like crazy.

While the popularity is undoubtedly a result of the bargain price, it nonetheless results in tens of thousands (or however many TouchPads were there in the market) of users who are now owners. These consumers would certainly appreciate updates and apps and whatever else they want. More importantly, if they are pleased enough with the TouchPad, the device could become an unheralded favourite through word of mouth.

Perhaps if good word spreads enough, HP might actually have an actual market on their hands, and eventually bring it back.

The conspiracy theorist in me (I call him Theo) likes to think that all of this was an elaborate and brilliantly evil plan by HP to create demand and publicity for the TouchPad.

(Hey, give me a break! Theo rarely gets the chance to breathe fresh air. Let him have his moment.)

It is my understanding that Touchpad's hardware cost is about $300.00. So hardware perspective, every sell is a loss.

Doubtful. kjk's link had some pretty clear comments about winding down production/not producing hardware in future. The market wouldn't be too happy if they start flip-flopping. Unless they pull some 3rd party partner out of their hat for WebOS rather soon, I think they, how do you say it "screwed the pooch" with this one.

Stockpiled parts at the factory(ies?) where the TouchPad's assembled, I've been hearing. Better to assemble 'em and sell for some reimbursement than to just toss the components for a complete loss.

I heard a lot of the parts were for their 7" model that was meant to proceed the Touchpad (Touchpad Go I believe it was due to be called)... but who knows?

Do they have adds on them or something like that? HP could still be making money indirectly from the sales. Plus there is the issue of market share.

No, not possible. HP management will have to drop the one year plan policy to think at this level.
