Aw, boo hoo! Jon says it isn't fair. Life isn't always fair, get used to it. Guess I should be pissing and moaning how I can't play Halo on my Wii.

Man, this is what happens when everyone gets a trophy in Little League.

As for Amazon trying to take over the world, I think the guy in the picture and you would get along just fine.

When Sony, BN, and Kobo start selling books in Mobi I will worry that Amazon does not sell EPub.
Amazon has prevented Sony from using Mobipocket. So in that case, there is no reason at all for Sony to sell Mobipocket format eBooks. Now because Amazon is keeping control over Mobipocket and AZW, B&N and Kobo have no choice but to go with ePub. What you are blaming on others is the fault of Amazon (who own Mobipocket).

I'm confused Jon, I thought Mobi was obsolete? Do you ever get dizzy reading your own posts?

Back when the Sony Reader did not have ePub, Sony wanted to add another format. Sony wanted to add Mobipocket. Amazon said in order to add Mobipocket, Sony would have to remove LRX as Mobipocket was to be the only format with DRM. Sony went with ePub with ADE via Adobe. That would not have happened if Mobipocket allowed Sony to use the format without the silly restriction.

Amazon owns Mobipocket. So the fact that Sony does not sell Mobipocket format is Amazon's fault.

Do you have any sources for these claims? I would be interested in reading about it.

No, Amazon prevented Sony from supporting DRM'd mobi and epub on the same device. Smashwords provides both epub and mobi formats. So does Fictionwise, for the books I buy. So does feedbooks for its freebies.

Amazon's not preventing Sony from selling mobi ebooks--they're refusing to share their DRM method. Remove the DRM requirement, and Amazon loses their market lock-in.

Sony's (and other bookstores') unwillingness to offer non-DRM'd ebooks is not Amazon's fault.

Yeah, it would surprise me, too. But I am working on a full-cast audio production. It feels about like that sometimes!

There are a lot of Xhosa and Zulu speakers, actually. Although I suspect that their audiobook usage is lower than would be the case in the US or Europe.

But maybe that's because there are no appropriate audiobooks available.

I can click if you need someone to click for Rock's version of the audiobook. Granted, I'll have no idea what I'm saying. But at least it will sound like what he wants.

Originally, Sony did want to add MobiPocket and not ePub, and They were told by Amazon that they'd have to drop support for the LRX drm, because MobiPocket's licenses requires that it be the only DRM system supported on the device. This was way before the ePub switch.

It often is a demand of the publisher to have DRM, not the store.

So for everyone complaining that Sony doesn't sell Mobipocket format eBooks, that is the fault of Amazon.
