1837 – The first commercial use of an electric telegraph is successfully demonstrated by William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone on 25 July 1837 between Euston and Camden Town in London.

1893 – The Corinth Canal in the Gulf of Corinth, Greece is used for the first time.

1909 – Louis Blériot makes the first flight across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air machine from (Calais to Dover) in 37 minutes.

1996 – The remains of a prehistoric man are discovered near Kennewick, Washington. Such remains will be known as the Kennewick Man.

2001 – Australian Ian Thorpe becomes the first swimmer to win six gold medals at a single World Championships.

2005 – The Provisional Irish Republican Army calls an end to its thirty year long armed campaign in Northern Ireland.

2005 – Tornadoes touch down in a residential areas in south Birmingham and Coventry England, causing £4,000,000 worth of damages and injuring 39 people.

Remember these well, living just down the road...

Also around that time we had an earthquake, which I felt as I was awake and in front of the PC at about 2am in the morning when it hit.

Both most unusual for the UK, in that they were big enough to notice and do some damage.

On 1 August 1861 the Times newspaper (UK) published the first ever weather forecast.

The forecast was put together by Admiral Robert FitzRoy, who led the meteorological department in the Board of Trade which was later renamed the Met Office.
