MobiPocket are a reputable company; I think that we can trust them to do whatever they consider to be in the best interests of their customers.

Though it came up yesterday, the financial records capacity of Mobi is back down again today. Something else is causing problems.

More information is needed. During the downtime, a blog explaining everything would have been a really nice thing to do for example.

Things are fine this morning.

Well, things improved overnight. Hopefully this is the end of the troubles.

My book "In The Beginning" went from second place to third place in sales while the system was down. I was in first place a month ago and had been there for about four months. That was rather impressive for a novice author who is still learning how to write.

Hopefully this is not the swan song for my sales. I strongly suspect that the Ballantine Books were sold on the other sites on that backup DRM server, but mine most likely was not as I am a relative unknown. (Gosh, I used to feel that way in high school forty years ago. I was not one of those star athletes who got all the attention from the girls.)

Ballantine has power and numbers and strength thereby, and my guess is that their sales continued during the outage. Nobody wants to tick off Ballantine.

Interestingly, I also got an email the other day from Mobipocket, inviting me to change my passwords. It's interesting because I bought precisely two books from Mobipocket, and that was lonnnng ago (whenever it was that Dune:The Butlerian Jihad was published was the last time I purchased from Mobipocket.) I was pretty committed to Palm Digital Media/eReader from the time when I got my Tablet until I got my Sony Reader.

They sent out an email to everyone whose account was on the affected server. I got one, too.

I got the same notice -possible security problems, new password needed etc. And I've never even bought a book from them! Just got a few free ebooks from the site.

I suppose one reason why Mobipocket can easily get off with the lack of information is that they are not US-based. It's a fact that US companies face a lot more legal pressure (see the latest case of Monster.com) and who can afford a potential class-action suit?

I just got one today, which amused me. I haven't bought anything. I signed up to get forum access and post in the Palm 5.3 beta forum.

They are owned by Amazon, which is US based.

Not sure if that matters. Mobipocket is a French subsidiary of Amazon. Unlike divisions, subsidiaries are separate, distinct legal entities.

Sure. But if someone decides to go after Amazon US because of the actions of their French subsidiary, I'm sure it will get their attention.

Ultimately, what any business sells is integrity: the customer buys from them because they are trusted. If something damages that trust, the business has problems. Incidents like the Mobipocket outage don't exactly build confidence in Amazon, and I'd be a bit surprised if there weren't folks at Amazon corporate asking "What happened, and how do we insure it doesn't happen again?"

I have a Mobipocket ID (created to participate in their forums). I just got their email yesterday about their problems and what they were doing. Uh huh. Now you tell me?

It doesn't go a long way to building my confidence in Mobi or Amazon.

The fact that they were willing to "take the hit" of effectively shutting down their business for 10 days because of a suspected security breach makes me think very highly of them indeed. To my mind, it shows that they put the interests of their customers as their #1 priority.

I concur. My issue was the lack of communication about what was going on while they were down. I think they did the right thing, but they could have told everyone what was going on earlier than they did.

Yes, I agree. The "site undergoing maintenance" message wasn't terribly informative, to say the least.
