I have one of those not-so-smart smart phones by Nokia. I got it for making phone calls. Outgoing phone calls. Nobody can call me as I usually have it turned off and only a few select people got my phone number.
Its prepaid. I usually spend 10 Euros a year.

The only reason I got a smart phone is that I can use it as a GPS. Also I am able to transfer my address book and I like having all the addresses with me.
If I could do that with an iPod touch then I would be content, but unfortunately at Apple GPSs only comes with Phone contracts :-(

It also has a camera that I tried out this weekend, but my DSLR takes better pictures :-)

Before I had a Motorola F3, but I decided to abandon it as turning it on took almost a minute.

I don't text. Thats more expensive then making a call.

That last one depends... For me, I usually only text when I'm on my way to my mother. A phone call would go from Germany/Austria/Hungary to the Netherlands, and back to Hungary. A text is much faster than having to say the same things on the phone. And thus a lot cheaper!

my "provider" is very cheap.

I pay 9 Euro Cents per minute. One SMS/Text message is also 9 cent.

German Telekom wants 29 cents per minute and 19 cents for an SMS (thats the special iPhone tariff .... special.... right)

Texting my parents is a no no. They would never be able to read them. They would fit in here perfectly :-)

I have to make an international call if I want to call my mother as she lives 3 countries away

And my mother would be kicked out of this group so fast!... I'm the strange one at home. I love my gadgets, but phones just never were my thing...

A phone call is 18 cent per minute and so is a SMS. But if i make an international call it's 79 cent start tariff + 18 cent per minute. While a SMS is 13 cent...

Here's what I'm getting:

First it was "We hate smartphones and don't much care for those who use them!"

Then it was "We don't see the point of smartphones and a few people who use them are really obnoxious!"

Then it was "We don't have smartphones but that doesn't make us all bad because (fill in reason here)."

Finally it boiled down to "I have a regular phone because I don't need/can't afford/justify the expense of the services a smartphone has to offer."

Why couldn't y'all have just started there? Other than DGma's delivery was much funnier of course

Data plans for smartphones are expensive. Believe me, we know it, and we wouldn't pay for it if we didn't have to. Unfortunately, there are the center-of-the-universe types who make the rest of us look bad. Many of them consider their phones badges of honor (or money); many are distinguished by the brand of phone they have, and many have no need for all the smartphone-ness. They're the ones with the fragile egos, and the rest of us who have smartphones and don't think they're a passport for a free ride on a damn TARDIS usually make fun of them.

I'm a geek, and have been since back when Apple ruled the roost and no one outside an office had heard of Microsoft. I'm thrilled to pieces that I can use my Droid X to surf the Web, access my server at home, or any one of a jillion other things and do it all on a Linux OS (that might be redundant but I digress...) Instead of bragging about those things however, I actually just do them and shut up about it. You may be surprised to find that many of us do; in fact I was a Luddite about it for several years and insisted on phones only so Shel and I could stay in touch when she got a job out of town.

Amazingly, I don't even talk on it while driving!!!

So, to recap...I have a smartphone, I don't shove it in other people's faces, I use most of its features, and I do it without my job requiring it. Also, all blanket statements are false...including this one. My 2 pence...
