The Voyage was released over 8 years ago, the PW3 shortly after that, and the Oasis 2 over 5 years ago. All of those and their successors handle panning zoomed images well enough. A Scribe wouldn't even need to zoom images significantly larger than the current maximum size.

amazon's processing delivers a double whammy to maps and other images with text. Even if the dimensional shrinking doesn't make them illegible, the blurring from the unnecesarily low quality JPEG compression frequently does.

I'm not at all defending them. I think it's wrong, but it's probably not stupidity or malicious intent but bean-counter driven.

Since unlike Smashwords, or PD sites, Amazon knows exactly which model you have they should be offering the full resolution to all newer models, no matter if download for USB or Whispernet WiFi to eink. They already charge KDP uploaders for delivery, so Mobile/Cell delivery to eInk with "free" mobile/Cell ought not to be a consideration of image size.

Also part of the reason for KFX was to be able to start reading during slow delivery.

So I totally agree, it's a stupid system they have. I was only musing about why they do it. I'm sure it's not arbitrary.

No, this is something different.

I have that e-book direct from the author's secret projects Kickstarter. That includes the book in various formats including generic EPUB and also EPUBs targeted to Kindle and Kobo. The generic and Kobo EPUBs are about 28MB, however the EPUB intended for Kindle is only 9MB.

Comparing the contents shows that the images are significantly reduced in the Kindle EPUB. For example the full-page image named personstencil.jpg is 1220x1793 pixels at 141KB in the generic EPUB and only 669x1000 pixels at 49KB in the Kindle EPUB.

I took a look at the free sample of the Kindle edition of this book available from Amazon. As far as I can tell the image quality matches the Kindle EPUB that was provided to me from the Kickstarter. Based on that I believe that the lower image quality of the Kindle edition of this book when compared with other e-book sellers is due to an intentional decision by the publisher and is not Amazon's fault.

Amazon is certainly to blame for many image quality problems in Kindle books but apparently not for this one.

Newer Cell/Mobile enabled Kindles do 4G. The Oasis "gen 2" 3G/4G does USA 4G.

Anyway I doubt Amazon will stop charging for delivery.
