We just went for a lovely afternoon ride seeing as the earlier rain had cleared up. It is a public holiday for ANZAC day in Oz to remember the people that have died in wars.

When we came back a package was waiting on the doorstep. (on a public holiday - what luck!) I though yippee it is a book I ordered from Amazon all the way from the US of A.

Gleefully I picked up the parcel, only to notice that the box was wet! VERY wet!
With trepidation I went inside to get something to cut the box and when I came out, bloke had opened it. (not too difficult with a soaking wet box). I checked to see if the book was dry; it seemed OK - a little damp maybe. But no! The front cover is torn

It did not rain whilst we were out and the front door area was dry when we got home. If it had rained heavily, I can see it getting wet there. But come on folks it had got wet before it got here!

I am pretty pissed! I have given feedback on the Amazon packaging site, but I really need to have a go at the contractor who did the delivery.

for listening. Time for my bath now

I'm upset.
If there is one thing that really bums me out it's when equipment fails. Today I got wet! My riding jacket has finally given in to old age and let in the rain. This jacket has kept me warm and dry through absolute deluges, riding for hours in storms that made Noah worry, but no longer.
A mild rain today and just a short 15k ride, and my shirt was soaked.

I bought it in the Italian Alps about 12 years ago. Bomb-proof, made for riding the twisty high mountain passes that make motorcycle riding in the Alps so wonderful. Gore-Tex lined, Cordura and Kevlar shell, articulated molded thermoplastic back, shoulder, elbow and forearm armor, zip-out winter liner, waterproof pockets, just about everything I could ever ask for in a Three-season riding jacket. And now it leaks...

I guess I shouldn't complain. I've worn it almost every day for more than 12 years. But it's like an old friend, and my old friend let me down. I went looking at the Internet and the company that made it is no longer in business. The closest jacket that still falls short cost $995 US! .And I'm not about to spend that kind of money on a Jacket! There are a couple in the $500 range that will almost fill the bill, (and I hate the thought of spending even that much) but still... it's not my old friend...
Bummer...

Can you imagine! If I had only known that when I bought it...

It's the Gore-Tex layer that has somehow been compromised. I keep the outer shell very heavily treated (using Nikwax!) but that's really only good for a light rain at slow speeds. The extra penetrating power added to rain by the higher velocity of the bike means a light rain can blow right through anything that isn't absolutely waterproof. It's water 'pressure.'

It's like having an old friend be on sick bed.
Have you considered purchasing Gore-Tex and hiring a seamstress to replace/repair it? I don't know how it is made, but sometimes Jackets can be opened and inside layers can be replaced.

If I were in Thailand or Malaysia I'd do that in a heartbeat. It would probably cost me all of $20 USD for the labor to have the entire job done, and done well! But the labor costs here in Japan would make it cost closer to $300. Just not feasible. That, plus the old thing is getting on in years... I've had to 'recover' the neck as it wore out twice already, but I did that myself with some chamois leather. The zipper ends are covered in a thin layer of super glue to keep them from fraying off the jacket completely.

I think it's time for me to let it retire gracefully...

It's always hard to let them go.
Hopefully, you will be able to find a replacement that you love.

Strider and Arwen do that quite frequently. Strider certainly does it when playing fetch!

Well, they are, and they aren't. They aren't 'true' nuts, but we can call them that. Have you ever seen them sold still in the shell? There is a good reason for that... Look here.

They do have some nice gear. I've looked at their site before. But I've narrowed my search down to three jackets;

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...er-Jacket.aspx
http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/r...der-gtx-jacket

Now let's see how long it takes me to make up my mind. LOL!

For what its worth I have a FirstGear Kilimanjaro Jacket and as you well know the rain here is special, to say the least, and it has never let me down. I was wearing the exact same jacket when I had my accident and it saved me from a nasty case of road rash. I would recommend Firstgear every time, that and Alpinestars, had a one piece from them and loved the level of water proofing, but I would never recommend a one piece unless it was always cold and wet.
