I think there are smaller cherry tree varieties available. My sister had one in the backyard of her first house. It wasn't very big and the cherries were wonderful.

what's his issue with trees? I have a canvas mountain man tent that I'm always having to drape over fences, cars, whatever to get it to dry

yep! dwarf trees! I planted 2 cherry dwarf trees this spring along with an apple and a plum. I want to get some dwarf nut trees next year

I have a clothes line inside my garage, for drying out tents and such. I can park the car outdoors for a night or two. Oh, and run a humungo fan to help the air move around in the garage.

It's more the maintenance he's worried about. Which is odd, as he wants fruit bushes! But a small cherry tree I could easily look after (I can prune, I just prefer not having to climb ladders to do so!). I'm now really craving fresh cherries. And sun-warm plums
